their pronouns are idol/artist

90% + of idols aren’t artists
To be considered as an artist they should at least be an ace at singing or dancing or rapping or producing or have prominent and impactful solo discography
Or they should have some significant input into the group, cuz most of the things related to the group is curated by labels: song choices, concepts, producing, choreo and etc…
It is really manufactured! But if idols themselves start having more input into the group then they can slowly become artists…
Real artists are Bigbang, Shinee, BTS, Stray Kids, Gidle(not all members), Taeyeon, Taemin and etc…

Yes, idols are artists. I think what they do falls under performing arts. Let's take a look at the definition.
Idols perform in front of an audience, whether that's virtually in music videos or live onstage.
Even if they aren't involved with the writing and producing process, they're still conveying ideas and musical pieces. It requires singing, rapping, and dancing in a way that effectively showcases these songs. It goes down to subtle things such as facial expressions and fan service.
I think it's a bit gatekeepy and elitist to say idols aren't artists.

That’s why NewJeans won’t be called artists cuz every single credit is given to MHJ! Artist in Njs is MHJ not the girls themselves

This is a silly question. Or it's silly that it's even a debate. Of course they are. Anyone who creates art is an artist. Just because someone doesn't like an artist, doesn't make them not an artist.
People have created some asinine criteria for the sole purpose of insulting people. The most common is that they have to be involved in the songwriting/choreography/etc. That's ridiculous. 99% of performers aren't involved with the creation of what they perform on paper, that's why composers/choreographers/writers exist, and it doesn't make them any less an artist. Nobody would ever say any classical performer isn't an artist, but for some reason pop musicians are held to a higher standard?
-
They participate in the creation of art (one way or another), they express forms of art, therefore they are artists. Even if they don't write, produce, etc. They are singing, they are dancing, they are performing. Even if they aren't GOOD at it (subjectively or objectively), they're still doing art. You don't have to be good at art to be an artist.

Is a cook at a good restaurant that makes dishes the Head Chef did the hard work to design, test and first make the artist, or is the Head Chef the artist? Even if the cook recreates the dish beautifully, time after time, are they an artist or just very talented?
I've long held that I don't think the majority of idols are.
They are (usually) very talented people and are very driven, but they are all mostly in a field where the true creative side of things is done by others. Most idols are the canvas upon which other peoples work is projected. They are the beautiful model that the fashion designer and make up artist displays their artistry through. And like I keep saying, idols work in a manufactured industry where a lot of the work they do is also heavily processed, focus grouped, sanitized, drafted and moved through so many hands that even those "other peoples" artistry is diluted down more. I also strongly suspect that for many idols, that is perfectly fine, being the "canvas".
Of course some idols do break the mold, when they eventually get enough clout and power to be able to start pushing their own work and artistry, Taemin-Identity pointed out a few. In saying that, I don't always thinking having writing/choreo credits necessarily pushes and idol to that higher level of artist unless they also have creative control and some degree of final say over the final product.
It's why some creatives and artists have disdain for the mainstream. It's why people with their own artistic drive sometimes don't throw their lot in with a big company, but prefer to go it on their own. Even if success isn't guaranteed.

Absolutely, they are artists. They perform, therefore they are artists. It doesn’t matter if, case-by-case, someone might argue that some of them aren’t involved ‘enough’ in the creative process etc, they are still working as performing artists. People can go to town arguing that some people are at a higher level than others if they want, but they’re still all in the same job….

Yes...... because they're in the MUSIC industry.

-
No, NJ members are credited in their songs.
-
No. I know by definition they are but I don't really think idols are like artists. I see artists as someone like Ariana Grande. A genius in music and producing. Idols are manufactured to the tea and half of the time they don't even make their own music, they don't style themselves, decide their own music, or do much of anything other than sing and dance, and half of the time the singing and dancing isn't even good.
-
No that's why they're called Idols.
The music industry has never held idols in high esteem and has always made the distinction between idols and artists. This is also why "their" music is aimed at a very young audience because idols are literally the fast food of music, a nice packaging but shitty content.

You really don't know which idols are really trying to express themselves in their dancing but it's not really translating on screen, which idols are trying to submit songs but aren't getting accepted and which idols just had an easier time getting the choreos down die to natural talent and got into the songcredits by adding a few lyrics to a song. Gatekeeping which idol is an artist and which is not is inevitably gonna end with getting it wrong and denying a person hard work and genuine effort.
