All of you, and K-Pop stans in general, need to stop pretending you don't care about Korean charting

  • You do. Stop lying. It's BS and you know it. I'm not going to post some long-winded diatribe today; I'm keeping it simple.

The same people who I see mocking the relevance of MelOn in particular are the same people making 5 achievement threads a day when their favorite artists pull off high MelOn debuts, roof hits and All-Kills.

The real tea is that the charts don't matter when your favs flop and then they're suddenly relevant when your favs have a hit.

THAT'S the tea and it's time for me to sip what's left after I spilled it

    :meme-mmm-tea:

  • I don't care about charting let alone Korean charting. The only reason I'm aware of any charting is because K-pop listeners keep talking about it so a lot do care you're right. I understand why people would care since the success of the group will lead to more music, but it's never been an interest to me since I'm okay with a group flopping as long as I like the music. Since it's such a big topic in K-pop communities from what I've seen in my short time in them, it feels inevitable that you have to talk about them though.

  • It's all a bunch of cope. Cope. Cope. Cope. Cope.

A bunch of bitter K-Pop stans who'd rather downplay the importance of Korean charting than admit their favorite groups' song(s) aren't gaining traction there.

Meanwhile, Korean chart accomplishments by far get the most engagement on every platform, from AKP to X to reddit.

Who are you all trying to fool?

  • Pretending Korea does not matter to Kpop is just Copium, when their acts fail at something in Korea.

One may conquer the world, but home will always matter more than rest of the world.

    Particularly in matters of culture.

Tbh that's one reason I'm not very active

I prefer having fun, charts are like math for me

  • I have said it before, I never really care about "charting" at all. Some people seems to look at charts constantly, bringing up success or not in different music shows. I could care less. Yes of cource I want my favorite to do well, and if they are a lesser known group that struggles I'm even happier if it goes well.

  • I think bgs fans in general learned to not care bc since 3rd gen we can count in two hands bgs who were truly known in Korea, but ggs, specially from the big4? Yep, they care or "cared" when their faves did good, nowadays what I see the most is the same stans from the past who worshipped kr charts to say their faves were on top suddenly saying kcharts are irrelevant :meme-mmm-tea: couldn't be me, just with Lisa, but I'm right in this case.

Also I think all metrics matter in the successful talk and idols care, let's not fool ourselves, how many idols say they want to be top 10 in charts in their cb etc and it isn't on hot100...

In the end even though I find it an interesting convo, as long as you are happy with your fave's music, charts success is just a plus, minus you, who cared when your faves were on top and now act like it's nothing :blehr:

  • Of course I'm happy if my fave groups are doing well on the charts and will congratulate them, but it won't be the end of the world for me if they don't chart well.

I also never argued with anyone or put another group down because of the charts. I only know about them if someone else shares the info. So there you go, I don't care.

  • I think you just have a different perspective because of your time as a kpop fan and the groups you follow. I assume mamamoo's success/popularity was directly correlated with their performance on the kcharts. I imagine for many years that is all older kpop fans like you were worried about, because it was all that mattered (correct me if I'm wrong though).

I started kpop with blackpink, and I genuinely didn't even know what the melon charts were for like the first 3 yrs I followed kpop, because it didn't seem important. It seemed blinks were mostly worried about youtube or spotify numbers and those were things I knew, but my engagement with kpop community was pretty surface level at that time.

And I don't even necessarily agree with the "you should be successful in your home country" thing because you have groups like BM or LSFM whose primary market doesn't even seem to be Korea. So why should I care if they aren't even being marketed there and very successful on other platforms?

  • Maybe accept that someone has a different opinion than you? ^^

Just because we say we don't care about them, doesn't matter we downplay their importance. They're just not important to us, personally.

  • Also, it's time to stop pretending our favorite artists don't chart watch too.

I never ever cared about MelOn or any other Korean chart, until the members of Mamamoo talked about how much they wanted their music to do well on it. And I'll never forget the adorable video of Wheein being told by a random staff member that her first solo song ever hit #1 on MelOn.

It's not just a different perspective. It's the ultimate perspective.

I have been the most vocal fan of a group that started from nothing when they debuted (MMM) and also a group that shattered every record when they debuted (NJ).

I have seen a group get a music show win on their very first week of eligibility (NJ). And I've been a ride or die fan for a group that took TWO YEARS to get their first win (MMM).

Throughout those experiences, do you know how much charts have been used to gatekeep (MMM) or deemed irrelevant (NJ) just to push a narrative or agenda?

But numbers never lie, and I never forget.

Also, Blinks ABSOLUTELY obsessed over the charts. It was ALL THEY HAD for two years, since BP had no physical album sales to speak of. And yours truly fought OH Blinks all the time.

  • Maybe accept that someone has a different opinion than you? ^^

It's not really my opinion. It's an observation. I wouldn't make this thread if I didn't see a pattern of hypocritical stans constantly dismissing the importance of MelOn and charting in Korea who then hype up both when their favorite groups achieve something.

That makes sense, because it's literally connected to their job. I guess in any type of work involving rankings and charts, people would monitor how well they do and it would affect their future work.

But please, don't generalise that all fans care about them, since it's simply not true. There are fans who track the charts regularly but there are also fans who don't know about the charts at all, as they may not be active on social media and just enjoy the music/videos.

My comments are directed at a very specific group of people, even if they seem general.

I'm not saying every single K-Pop fan is obsessed with charts. I'm saying every K-Pop fan who specifically downgrades and downplays Korean charts is full of shit, especially when we can easily find those same people spamming achievement threads when their favorite groups do well on said charts.

    It is absolutely just cope.

Your aesthetic is sooooo beautiful!!! Wow :omgr:

Btw as I said in my post, yeah, there are a lot of fans that are here mainly for just enjoying the music. It's not like you discovered kpop and directly went to check melon top100 to choose who you will stan :skull: , op is talking about some kpop fans that talks about groups popularity, success metrics, etc.

Thank you so much! :holding-back-tears: I really love your signature as well! It's so dreamy :borahae:

And I get it now as the OP explained to me. Their first posts sounded very general to me, that's why I replied this way. I was one of those people, I had no idea about the charts until I joined a kpop forum  Even on IG, not many kpop fans talk about them, at least the ones I follow.

  • :meme-big-banged:

Look if anything I should be the one who's mad. The kpop community collectively decided years ago that YT doesn't matter so BM's 100's of millions of views mean nothing because "something something payola and bot farms".

It's ok, it stopped mattering when BP and BTS were the only ones getting high views and then just BP and the pinks solos now :pepe-flirt: but it still matter, it's just that the others groups suck :smirks:

    Omg, thank you :blushing:

Yeah, Yama forgets we have normal fans here kkkk

I knew bc i "followed" BP debut through twitter without actually following accs, I just visited some fanaccs and there they were posting a lot of "achievements", but chart success was never a criteria to make me like an act, it's just nice seeing your idol gets recognized, etc, but this is more about ego than love for fans:sweatr:

  • Before Knowing kpop i never care about charts. I listened mostly rock in english and spanish, and in my circle i never had a conversation about charts or sales, always was about the quality of the music. So, seeing how the majority of kpop fans are obsessed with koreans charts was a surprise.
Besides this, i try a couple of times to be a success stan with Twice and it was so boring. I was like : -Oh, Twice make that? Nice, Mmm. what i do with that?-

The only "use" i find to this metrics is to make fun of others. But for that you have to be a very very "special" type of person, and I'm way too old for that. Maybe twelve years ago, but now no, no way

  • Omg, thank you :blushing:

Is the gif on the right from some series or you made it yourself? I especially like that one, with the twinkling stars

And I agree, it's nice when someone shares they got a high place or if they win in the music shows, but it's not the most important thing for me. Obviously, the artists would care about this too, to some extent. I know there's a lot of people who focus on that, but I try not to engage in discussions, because they often end in arguments.

You should be grateful. The K-Pop Arms Race for arbitrary YouTube records was one of the most insufferable eras of K-Pop, and I don't miss it. I'll take chart wars over that exhaustively pointless posturing over view counts any day.

I used to make gifs in Photoshop and it was very time consuming, but fun and I could make exactly what I wanted. Now I also look for some nice ones online, I don't have time to make them anymore  I know that there are some online websites where you can create gifs from videos though, so maybe it's easier now.

  • People have crazy high expectations for charting. Not every group can be #1. I couldn't imagine standing the most "popular" group either they are usually mainstream garbo like Tswift, good for sheeple I guess.

I used Photoshop to do some changes in photos to my family like black and white photos I would "color" (I think that's how we say..), but yeah, I also don't have much time, but it is a hobby I would like to have later bc i love create things and I have some gifs ideas that I would like to do.

It's a little difficult to make good quality gifs though

My gifs always end bugged when I make them on Premiere
