It seems like there is still backlash about the snowdrop drama even after jtbc's clarification

  • I don't know what to say, the issue seems to be pretty serious, jtbc clarified that it's black comedy but knets aren't taking it well

The following is the full text of JTBC's official position.

JTBC reveals its position on the controversy related to the drama 'Snowdrop'.

“Snowdrop”, which is scheduled to be broadcast in the second half of this year, is by no means a drama that undermines the democratization movement and glorifies the National Security Agency and spies.

'Snowdrop' is a black comedy that satirizes the presidential election in a confrontation between the two Koreas in the background of the military regime in the 1980s. It is also a melodrama of young men and women who are sacrificed in that incident.

As part of the unfinished synopsis was leaked online, various criticisms continued to arise based on specific sentences without context, but these are only speculations.

In particular, claims such as 'spies (from the North) sent to the South lead the democratization movement', 'the character reflects a specific person who led the student movement', 'beautification of the National Security Agency', etc. are not only completely different from the contents of 'Snowdrop', but also irrelevant to the intention of the production.

JTBC clarifies that the current controversy has nothing to do with the content and production team's intention for 'Snowdrop'. In addition, please refrain from making reckless criticism of the unreleased drama.

    1. Black comedy? What kind of bullsh*t

    2. Black comedy ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

    3. You guys should know about what happened to Joseon Exorcist and act accordingly

    4. National Security Agency f*ckers. What the f*ck is all this bullsh*t?

    5. ?...... okok, let's make another Joseon Exorcist

    6. But if that's really not the context, then just say clearly that there are no spies and no National Security in your plot?? What misunderstanding?? What kind of clarification is this??

    7. Are they crazy calling this black comedy? F*ck

    8. Please, stop bullsh*tting... seriously, this is even worse than Joseon Exorcist..

    9. They already filmed the drama with the male lead as a spy so they can't deny the fact that he's a spy.

    10. Calling that period of time "black comedy"? Are they insane?

There are still victims suffering from the aftereffect of the suffering,
People were killed after being labeled as spies and their families are still alive,
JTBC never said that the male lead was not a spy nor that they will change the name of the female lead, while claiming that the work is "black comedy"

    1. They dare touch the Democratic Party???

    2. This wasn't something that was only brought up now, it's been a long talk already...

    3. You i-roach f*ckers, look at thisㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ seriously, we are not at that point yet but do you really want to see this drama being killed off?

    4. They are turning the Democratic Party that arose from these sacrifices into black comedy? F*ck

    5. Who!!!!!!!!!!!! Who is calling this black comedy?!!!!!! I'm seriously so pissed off

    6. Once again, I'm getting mad

    7. Black comedy ㅠ f*ck

    8. Looks like these broadcast stations don't know what's black comedy

    9. Are they in their right minds...?

    10. Ah seriously, they are pissing me off even more than Joseon Exorcist? This happened only a few years ago but they are deciding to shut their eyes and go with it ㅡㅡ black comedy? Romance?

  • Jisoo should just drop out.

I don't think that's possible, she has been filming for a long time already, it's either they continue with the whole cast or everyone drops out, or a better but more difficult option, make adjustments to the drama to avoid backlash when it airs

  • Jisoo should just drop out.

Why? Something she auditioned for and was chosen amongst a lot of other actresses who also auditioned. Something she has been working hard on.

She should drop out because? Is she in charge of production or is she the one calling the shots on how the series goes or is she involved in some personal scandal?

  • from what I understood first synopsis was kind of revealing a bit that there will be some romance between student and some spy - seems like spy was from "other side of barricade"...

but honestly... things like that happen all the time in real life, there were even things like that happening during freakin WWII when some people were taking decisions to just drop everything because they fell in love with "enemy" and they runned together away to Argentina, Brazil, or any other far away place that was "safe" at this point...

Well, tell that to Knetz. They are our for blood

Its going to get backlash either way now.

So you want Jisoo to get insane backlash and sponsorships to drop her and maybe other BP girls because thats how insane stuff is in Korea atm.

Also Jisoo character is named after a protestor which shouldnt happen.

  • Look how Koreans reacted at the bullying incidents that didn't affect them personally. Now consider this point in Korean history that involved the entire nation and affected millions of Koreans one way or another. You'd be extremely biased if you think Koreans won't stop until the drama is completely cancelled. Literally this is the worst time politically to release something like that, maybe in better times, but not now.

  • I don't know about this Korean history nor about what the drama is about but just reading the op it sounds like the historical event was Korea protesting for a democracy like what happened with the Arab Spring but the drama distorts certain facts which is angering knetz? But jtbc responds basically saying it's their own fictional version.

It's a grey area. One the one hand it's being marketed as a fictionalised version so it's their own story and should be allowed to on ground of creativity, but on the other hand difficult real world events especially involving death aren't really the best source to make fictional stuff from. Like we had multiple terrorist attacks here over the last few years and if a company wanted to make a drama out of them im sure there would be a huge uproar about. Or even specific things like making a drama out of the disappearance of Madeline Mcann would certainly not sit well with a lot of people.

The main issue is not really the spy but the NSA character whose the second male lead Im pretty sure.

National Security Agency official Lee Kang-mu, a principled man who never backs down, a stickler for rules who does not compromise.

NSA were killing people and doing alot of forture and causing deaths.

    Read this.

  • Which sponsorships will drop Jisoo cuz of this?

This is not her doing or it is not her decisions that have made this issue arise.

Please, she is not going to lose any personal sponsorships from this.

Not from Dior, or Michaa or Line.

  • Even if it’s their twist and different version Koreans are nationalistic and very proud of their culture. Look at how they reacted to AOA Jim-in and Seolhyun history scandal. I feel bad for Jisoo though. She worked hard for this drama but for the sake of her image she can do another role.

And Mr. Queen drama got some black-lash for distortions but JTBC really did screw themselves over with this one.

  • They should cancel the drama. It's clear at this point that this is what knetz want

Jisoo was already going to get a ton of hate as an idol-actress. These new issues on top of that will completely ruin her rep in Korea before she even gets to properly debut as an actress. Knetz are out for blood right now - Snowdrop hasn't even aired and they're like this. It doesn't help that Jisoo is under YG and YG was also involved with another drama recently cancelled for distorting history. I'm sad for her and it would suck sm for all her work so far to go to waste but it's way too risky for her future in Korea to let her act in this drama

  • yeah because 20 comments from pann really shows what the GP is thinking

This is a pretty serious issue especially after the cancellation of joseon exorcist in which yg was also involved, so I wouldn't say it's 20 comments...

They are already witch-hunting Jisoo about not reading khistory and they are going after thai blinks for sending her support trucks when it isn't even their fault.

  • They should cancel the drama. It's clear at this point that this is what knetz want

I feel bad for Jisoo, considering this is her first drama. But yeah it needs to be canceled.

They will continue to hate on her.

    Its better this way

  • Gonna post this here too for people who are confused what they are pissed about:

I'm not korean so I'll just explain what I read from koreans what the outrage is about. It's rumoured to be about the protests in the 1980s, where peaceful and innocents protestors (students) were massacred and tortured by the Korean national security officials under the pre tense that they were north korean spies. One of the biggest issues is that they are rumoured to be using real names of real people during the massacre, like the student Jisoo is supposedly playing is called Yeong - Cho, one of the people who saw her friends getting tortured and killed was known to be very smart and intelligent battling against the guards and apparently the drama made her a damsel in distress. They are also painting the peaceful protestors in a negative light by making the main characer an actual north korean spy and painting it so that the national korean guard were right in killing those students. One of the main characters is also part of the korean guards that killed so many students and he's postively portrayed as a handsome male lead.

I'm not korean so I can't really speak on it but apparently the whole incident is still very sensitive for koreans because of how recent it was. It's best that they change things tho if they want to continue this program, idk why JTBC thought it was a good idea.

yikes this is worrying me now ?(

i doubt its going to be cancelled i hope everything works out for jisoo

  • Which sponsorships will drop Jisoo cuz of this?

Please, she is not going to lose any personal sponsorships from this.

Not from Dior, or Michaa or Line.

This is much bigger issues then Excorcist which lost like 20 sponsors and investors.. bigger then Mr Queen where lead actress just lost sponsorships.. No way this drama airs so better to be one of the first to quit.

  • I feel bad for Jisoo, considering this is her first drama. But yeah it needs to be canceled.

They will continue to hate on her.

    Its better this way

Knetz are calling her stupid all over pann and qoo like she's the one who wrote the script and chose the plot herself...

I honestly can't understand why YG would let her take this role as her first drama. Now I'm not sure when we'll ever see her debut as an actress :(

  • They should cancel the drama. It's clear at this point that this is what knetz want

it sucks, yg set her up with this one, they should've picked a smaller role for her or a drama with another plot, she was already being compared to other bigger actors who are part of the cast

  • Gonna post this here too:

Yeah, thanks for posting this. It’s not about OMG YOU CANT MAKE A DRAMA ABOUT A CERTAIN TIME PERIOD.

It’s that they try to distort history and make it some cute love story while still using real life events and people.

  • It will really turn the table when JTBC decides to release the teaser this week and turns out its so different from what people speculating.

The main backlash is regarding this NSA stuff which they already said who he was.

  • This is much bigger issues then Excorcist which lost like 20 sponsors and investors.. bigger then Mr Queen where lead actress just lost sponsorships.. No way this drama airs so better to be one of the first to quit.

Yes Dior is going to drop Jisoo as a Global Ambassador cuz of an unaired drama.

  • Well, the lesson to take from all this

    1) never do historic dramas

    2) not even if fictional

    3) only do silly romcoms based in current times or in the future

    4) never ever involve anything chinese, japanese or north korean.

I doubt GP itself cares much. As usual its a few knetz comments (who by the way always happen to sound exactly as nationalistic far right people in the west do) that's get blown up in media, which then ofc gets repurcussions when the sponsors go into overprotection mode and drops everything related.

  • it sucks, yg set her up with this one, they should've picked a smaller role for her or a drama with another plot, she was already being compared to other bigger actors who are part of the cast

YG didn't pick this role for her. Am not going to let you disrespect Jisoo like that.

She auditioned and she was picked amongst many other actresses.

YG didn't hand her the role.
