Is anyone else losing interest in K-Pop?

  • Maybe this is the wrong place to ask but I just find myself not being interested in K-Pop anymore as I used to.

I would say my peak Kpop years were from 2014-2019.

Ever since Covid I found myself caring less about Kpop until NewJeans debuted. But I'm not sure if 1 group keeping my niche interest afloat is even worth it anymore. I really couldn't care less about every other active Kpop group right now. And all the other groups I like/liked have declined in music quality or have disbanded and quite frankly I don't really care about their solo works.

The last few years I found myself listening to way more Western music, as well as J-Pop and my own country's music. It's a much more fun experience for me and being away from toxic Kpop fan culture is so refreshing. I don't care about chart performances and all that crap. I just enjoy the music. Something that is hard to do in Kpop a lot of the times due to its nature.

So yeah, I'm thinking of quitting Kpop altogether but I like NewJeans too much for me to quit completely. Maybe I should just start treating them like every other artist I consume. But it's hard when they're always getting shitpiled on from every other petty fandom.

Is anyone else losing interest in Kpop?

  • I didn't lose interest in Kpop, but I did lose interest in variety shows of groups that are not BTS.

That is how I got to know lots of other groups and their personalities before and I used to really enjoy the times when I was watching a lot of it.

Don't know why, but every time I try to watch, I get distracted and start doing other stuff.

I wasn't up to date much with groups that debuted after 2020 until maybe late last year. Was finally getting more interested in late 4th gen groups but then the whole MHJ drama happened and I am now sticking to 3rd gen and early 4th gen as all the resulting drama sucked the fun out of it for me.

  • i'm pretty sure most people just like individual idols rather than kpop itself anyways

after stepping foot into the world of jrock and band music most of kpop became garbage to me

  • I started losing interest since 2020.

While I do like a couple songs here and there, I don't feel particularly attached to any group. And tbh I get bored of the songs most of the time very quickly (with a few exceptions).

A few days ago I was watching mvs of 2nd and 3rd gen and realized kpop has changed, but more importantly most of the reasons why I liked kpop aren't present anymore.

  • Nope, over 5 years into Kpop and still going strong. This year's song quality is definitely a step below 2020-2023, which were peak years, and more on par with 2019 which was pretty weak overall. But overall, my interest level hasnt changed. The first couple years were all about Twice and BP, then i discovered Izone in 2020-2021 and have been obsessed with them even to this day. Recently i discovered Oh My Girl's amazing discography.

  • I haven't lost Interest in kpop personally but jpop has stolen my soul...I feel more relaxed and excited about the groups I stan more so then kpop. The vibe and music just hits different. But I'm one of those people who has adhd and I get bored quickly and move on quickly but that's also why I stan so many groups, it keeps me busy.

  • I miss the time when idols of several groups would go on variety shows and actually be funny and entertaining. This made kpop feel less serious and more fun.

Actually I was a jrock fan before becoming a kpop fan and tbh something that made it more easier getting into kpop is that at that time it was easier finding translations to what the idol is saying XD

for me i've never been a lyrics person, i like to focus on the instruments and stuff

  • I have been a casual consumer of kpop music for quite awhile - didn't stan anyone until BTS. When I got into BTS and started consuming other 3rd gen music more - found quite a few songs I loved from other 3rd gen artists like Monster by Exo and DD x4 by Blackpink. This is also the time I got into variety and learned more about some of the idols involved.

I then found places like Twitter and AKP. Blessing or curse? I realized how toxic the culture could be and that it wasn't something I wanted to be tied to, so I stepped back again. Still stan BTS, but have gone back to casual Kpop consumption. Besides BTS, most of 3rd gen has disbanded/gone solo and since it was those idols I knew most, variety doesn't hold the same pull either.

I wouldn't characterize this as losing interest in kpop since I still listen to music and watch MVs, but it's more for aesthetics and also cheering on better Asian American representation in the West.

  • I am also losing interest. Still love my faves but I feel no motivation to listen to other music. Back when I first started in 2017 I was always listening to kpop even groups that I didn't stan because it all sounded so good. But none of these new groups interest me enough to even check out more than one song from them.

I'll just stick to nostalgia/faves until 5th or maybe 6th gen impresses me again.

  • It often happens to me but then something reignites my interest again. Like my time on AKP has always been on/off. Longest I wasn't active was close go a year perhaps.

  • I didn't know anything about Kpop until I stumbled on BTS music in 2021. Checked out other groups (male and female) but none piqued my interest. Stayed with only BTS and never looked back since.

I'm only here for BTS. :borahae::borahae::borahae::finger-heart::finger-heart:
