Stray Kids (and Ateez + (G)I-DLE) contract renewals

  • With today being Stray Kid's 6th anniversary as a group, it's around the time that groups start to discuss contract renewals. Stray Kids have around one year left on their contract, so with their next comeback and their tour that will probably be all for major activities (maybe a mini album in early 2025). This leaves me wondering-- is Stray Kids going to renew their contracts or not? Or will SKZ leave JYP for solo activities but not group activities (unlikely since no members have any official solos)

Stray Kids could absolutely leave JYP, they have the fanbase to bring to another company or they could even form their own company as BtoB did. 3Racha are competent producers, and they created SKZ-FLIX themselves so I don't have doubt that they would struggle in the creative department.

I also wonder what will happen to groups that are set to disband/end contracts soon, specifically Ateez and (G)I-DLE. Both groups have creative input into their music; Soyeon being a producer and songwriter and Hongjoong also producing and writing songs. However, neither groups have as much control over their music as SKZ so I don't know how independent from their labels they could be. Will these groups renew or leave their labels? Thoughts?

  • 2 years left (and that was a year ago)

Yeah, I didn't think they'd stay with Cube. Knowing how they dealt with the Soojin drama and generally how Cube treats their artists it seems like not the best company. Plus idle is fairly popular so joining another company or just leaving for solos seems likely.

  • I did a thread about Stray Kids' contract renew a few weeks ago too when they were in the middle of their longest break. I think their signed their contracts earlier than we expect, since they released a pre-debut album that was commercialized and promoted in early january before their official debut in march. So I suppose their signed their contracts towards december, 2017 when their reality show ended.

I wouldn't be surprised If they were already discussing If with the agency months prior. Personally, I think they will all renew.

I think they'll do a BP and go separate ways for their individual activities and maybe still be under Cube for Gidle activities...

but all of the members have lots of solo activities so them doing their own things wouldn't be a surprise...

As I was saying in another thread - the only member I'm curious about is Yuqi and whether she will continue to promote and undertake activities in SK since history and precedent tells us that all (I think it's all) chinese idols return to China and never return back to SK lol - Yuqi being the only one who has made previous comments about remaining/liking SK enough to continue to undertake activities here

  • All 3 will stay imo, they are all still doing amazing, have full creative control within the company, no need to rattle shit for no reason

in term of stray kids, 1 benefit that wouldnt transfer with them is jype deals with other countries, have deals with sony music japan and republic records(which houses drake, tswift, metro, grande, etc) in the usa is a big deal for being global

  • Ateez ain't going anywhere....KQ is home. They also are taking care of Xikers....that's a no-brainer.

KQ has never mistreated them, always handles problems, gives them the time off they need. They have their hands on whatever they want to do.

  • However, neither groups have as much control over their music as SKZ so I don't know how independent from their labels they could be.

Why do you think this is the case with Idle? They make their own music (4/5 members are involved in song writing/composing their songs), EVERY song on their albums were written by a member, they decide on the concept themselves, decide on line distribution, decide the title track, etc. I'd say they have absolute control over their music, perhaps even more than a Big 4 group.

Yeah, Yuqi mentioned before that she will always put the group activity before her individual activity.

Personally, I doubt Gidle will stay with Cube because they always talk about how long they've got left on their contracts. I'd love it it they joined up with a popular, self-producing boy group (a la Stray Kidz) to set up their own company and share resources for both BB & GG divisions. That combined power will be amazing, and the members are already friends anyway (for example, Bang Chan is really close to Minnie)!

  • That's the million dollar question right - like Cube (as of right now at least) need Gidle more than Gidle need Cube lol

I mean but for Gidle who is bring home the bacon to Cube??? lol

You basically described Stray Kids. Seems pretty equal

Yeah, I have a feeling that they won't leave KQ.

I wanted to say that they wouldn't leave KQ because of the fact that EDEN-ary make most of their songs. (and Hongjoong seems to get along with some of them, and I have even seen BALM being called his friend)

But then I remember that EDEN-ary make Dreamcatcher songs too...

Ateez aren't self produced enough to stand on their own.

They rely on Edenary (Leez, Ollounder etc) for their songs. Hongjoong is nowhere near the level of Soyeon or 3Racha in terms of control over the discography or sound - so I don't think Ateez are comparable to SKZ/Idle in this situation.

  • Yeah, I have a feeling that they won't leave KQ.

it started off rocky but hongjoong didn't give up and now they are all super close. Hongjoong does a lot of Ateez stuff with Eden-ary and I just can't see them leaving a company where they have this much freedom.

  • I'd be very surprised if Stray Kids members don't renew.

They have creative control and seem content with their label overall. They also often express future wishes/goals that they want to achieve together, so I have no doubt they'll stay together. And considering they can do what they want with in their label that they seem fine with, my guess is they all renew.

My apologies, I guess I was under the assumption that the Big 4 would be more micromanagey given how they've treated their other groups but I'm glad to learn that SKZ is an exception and they're also very self-made. Despite not being a boy group stan, I still have to respect them because of that, similar to how I hope people will respect (G)I-DLE even if they aren't Neverlands (which is why I questioned the person I quoted why they think Idle has less control over their music than SKZ).

Don't need to apologize, It's okay!

I also have lots of respect for (G)I-DLE and always root for their success.

This is exactly it. Few groups have Idle's creative freedom

Oh my baby sweet like bubble gum!

  • It would be good if JYP would give SK their own label within the company, just like Suju has with SM. Since they literally do everything themselves except maybe choreo, it would be great for them
