  • It's simple. Companies don't really care about what kind of attention their artists get as long as they stay relevant, so rumours are benefitting for them

Any publicity is good publicity, except if its bullying or drug use in Korea.

When it is not anything serious like cut noodles, then you have an entire fandom motivated and supporting that idol to the hilt, and a lot of people talking about the particular idol and their group.

Its maybe a coincidence in timing or not, but in the last 6 months Karina has been getting a lot of attention and a lot of major CFs.

  • Not unreasonable assertion tbh. The standards for convicting someone of libel/slander are much lower in Korea than it is in the US i think. It's REALLY hard to successfully sue someone who you think slandered you, if you're a public figure in the US.

Korea has draconian libel laws...one can be found guilty even if speaking the truth.

  • Korea has draconian libel laws...one can be found guilty even if speaking the truth.

It's such a tough issue when looked at deeply though.

To some degree, the idea that you can be held libel for speaking the truth actually has SOME merit.

Eg in situations where victims of police brutality in America have the brutality they received downplayed because media/commentators leak their true, but unrelated, criminal records to make them seem deserving of brutality. "LOOK HE HAD DRUG CHARGES IN THE PAST, CLEARLY HE DESERVED TO BE SHOT BY POLICE"

Or in Australia, there's a high profile feminist, Grace Tame. She was victim of SA from her teacher while she was 15, and her rise to becoming a high profile feminist voice was because of the incredible work she did in getting justice for her abuse, in getting the laws changed in how victims are treated and how the crimes committed on her are classified and other advocacy work for victims of SA. The right wing conservative crowd in Australia HATE her with a passion. They are constantly trying to ruin her reputation, silence her and diminish what happened to her.

Some of the things they tried to do to ruin her reputation included releasing details and photos of her using marijuana, including a photo of her with a bong (5 years after her abuse took place). This was done to of course try and ruin her reputation and right wing ass goblins even used it to imply she was a dishonest person and that it was proof her SA as a teen wasn't true.

True things can be used as out of contexts weapons to destroy the reputations and lives of people long after the fact or when the "truth" being told has no bearing on the rest of the story. We've seen in countless times in kpop with "she was a bully when she was 12" and how badly a truth, no matter how small in reality, snowballs into the end of careers for adults. Hell, or truth about being a bit of an idiot online and having a girlfriend has possibly ruined Seunghan's career.

So yeah I see a point in "being held libel for the truth" being useful. But unfortunately it's also heavily misused to silence people when the truth IS relevant.

  • Only the Kpop industry can be ignorant of what Youtubers that have Lawyers can do also in terms of Youtube that's tiny compared Sssniperwolf with 34m subs did after getting jacksfilms home address and doxxing him did.

And Sssniperwolf basically got away with it despite Youtube's policies, then again karma had something else in store for her

  • Good, I really hate those youtube accounts that are just blatantly making stuff up and having things in their headlines like

Idol A cheated! or Idol B is being bullied by her group members!

And that idol isn't even dating as far as anyone knows. And there is no indication whatsoever for bullying, not even a RBF that could be constructed as a nasty look from another member
