Peak red velvet vs peak aespa, which group was bigger?

  • Hmmm, if we compare each of their biggest hits, Red Flavor and Next Level, they both were national hit level.

Psycho was bigger than Savage though, I think.

I think Red Velvet has the edge due to Irene and Psycho. But, AESPA still has time to release another hit, and once Karina is finally allowed to do solo deals, she may rival Irene.

Right now, I think Red Velvet had higher peaks in certain areas, but AESPA still has time to surpass them.

  • as usual the question isn't who is bigger but rather the metrics on uses to determine "biggerness"

That's what I was thinking of too, I'm glad I'm not the only thinking that way :-)

Like with everything, it depends on what you're actually comparing, there are different ways (or metrics, stats) of looking at it.

If we're looking at album sales, then Aespa peaked higher with 2.1M album sales for their My World EP.

If we're looking at international digital performance then I couldn't say, but if I had to guess they're roughly even.

If we're comparing k-chart peaks, both Next Level and Red Flavor were strong #1 ('national hit' level) songs.

If we're comparing Gallup results, both Red Velvet as Aespa had #6 as highest ranking, but RV with 7.8% and Aespa with 6.5%.

If we're talking group popularity and recognition in SK, then I'd give that one to RV because they had Irene giving that extra uplift boost and I think that the combined individual popularity of an Irene, Joy, etc was stronger than that of a Karina, Winter, etc.

That's as it is for now. I'd say Aespa has a higher chance for an additional peak than RV due to Aespa still being in the first years of their career, if SM can make some magic happen again... yeah, I know, SM doing a good job is a pretty slim hope.

  • Depends. Peak in Korea? Hard to say, Red Velvet probably. Peak internationally? Well Aespa have much better touring ability already and sell way way more, but never had a song imho as big as Bad Boy or Psycho with i fans. Probably just barely Red Velvet.

Fan power? Aespa already clears Red Velvet in this. I would say Aespa is a bit bigger overall just because in terms of general popularity Red Velvet was a tiny bit bigger, but in terms of fans Aespa feels a lot lot bigger and will end up leaving a massive gap in touring, streaming and sales overall.

  • but then one might argue that kpop has dramatically increased in popularity since RV's first few years...

and thus absolute measurements are "meaningless" in this regards...

for k-charting for example I use the following metrics which are all valid and invalid depending on the user

    gaon/circle points

but for what songs? TT only? all bsides? do we then use averages?

total points/number of songs or total points for TT/number of songs

then we gotta take into the period - obviously RV songs have been out longer so do we look at points over 1 month? 3 months? 6 months? 12 months?

do PAKs mean anything? CAKs? RAKs?

what about number 1s on melon? but melon was a lot stronger during RVs first few years compared to right now

    do UL even matter?

one can see from just the above that's only a discussion on k-charting and some of the criteria off the top of my head I'm sure you can think of plenty more

  • I'm Reveluv and aespa are definitely more popular by far. Their Digital and physical sales are very good from the start. They have huge fandoms in Japan and China. Red Velvet's digital success has always been consistent, even though they have a few missed songs. They have made public accept their unique concepts. I think it is a great success that Red Velvet is in the 3rd generation and is in the top 3. Although groups like Newjeans Ive have been taking over the chart since last year. Netizens haven't given up on Aespa. I think Aespa will have the same success and still have a chance to rise to #1. That's why I think people on this forum a little bit underestimated aespa.
