Do you agree that after 7 years we shouldn't expect Idols to renew/stay in group?

  • What is your take on it?

Especially when someone just had enough of Idol life and want to do something else or just hide away from all that spotlight?

  • I don't think most people "expect" it per se, but hope for the best.

Even groups whose main selling point was being "close", or OT5/OT7/OT9, or whatever have ended up going their separate ways.

Plus, what these people show us is only what they and the company want us to see. We have no idea what is truly going on behind the scenes. No matter how much we think we know them.

So, yeah, I always look at renewals in the light that it may or may not happen. I'm honestly more surprised when the full group renews like Twice and BTS rather than when they don't. (SM groups don't count since they have the slave contracts that are an open secret.)

  • it depends on the situation, for up10tion I had a feeling they would leave top media because it's shit, they want to stay together at least the main 7 but who knows when that will be, etc.

There's groups you expect or hope renews because they are doing well and you love them aka SF9

Infinite being together but in different companies and the future unclear until one day sunggyu is like i created this we are having a comeback here you go...that's amazing.

For the groups I enjoy, of course i want them to renew, I want my faves to keep making music for years to come, but if they find that after 7 years they just aren't enjoying it anymore, that's okay too. I'd rather people that I enjoy find something they LOVE to do, instead of being stuck in something they are FORCED to do.

I expect that if a group has a strong family bond like VAV that htey want to renew and stay together, I expect a group like Ateez to continue their contracts. I don't see e'last making it past 7 years, I don't see VIXX going any longer in fact I wish they weren't. Unlike Highlight or Infinite they haven't really done anything but 3 of them doing a little song and some fan meets, they seem like they are too distant as soloists to want to do group activities, in that case I'd rather they just officially disband.

so my take is, I don't expect anything, but if it's a group I enjoy I would love for them to continue. I don't really consider myself an akgae or a solo stan of anyone so I'm not over here praying a group goes away so my fave can be a shining soloist.

  • You should never expect anything from Kpop idols, because none of us know what they're actually thinking. It might seem easy to assume that a successful group (which is more or less every group that makes it to their 7th year) would want to continue, but you just never know. They may have other aspirations you're unaware of.

Looks like the pattern changed, almost every 3rd gen group already renewed

In actuality, almost every 3rd gen group already disbanded. The few that are left have already renewed with the exception of BP (and possibly RV, because lord only knows how shady SM structured their contracts at this point.)

  • Only issue I have is the 7 year dialogue is - fans will bang on for years about letting their idols live their life, be free to choose songs or ideas etc - they want freedom for their idol.... until renew time.

When renew time comes about, the MUST renew - they MUST keep together as a group, the fans desire for the group to continue supersedes any previous proclamations of supporting the idols freedom.

Look at the responses to the Irene article a bit back - of the BP stuff now. Fans talk a big game about idols being free, until its renew time, then they're all in on wanting the idol to forgo their choices to continue the group.

  • We shouldn't expect our faves to renew after 7 years. It sad of course but its their choice to make.

For BTS, I just don't see any reason for them to to not renew. They have the resources. They get to work with people they look up to and release songs that they want for their solos. Aside from the endorsements/brand ambassadorship, each member can sell 1-2m albums alone. They also own shares in the company.

  • I'll state what I've said before especially as it applies to GG and female idols

history and precedent has shown us that GG just do not renew with all members with the same company

in the entire kpop history only three groups (Twice/Dreamcatcher/Mamamoo*) have all their members renew with the same company...

therefore the expectation should be that GG do not renew (obviously fans would want their favs to renew that's just being a fan)

  • 7 years is a really long time. It doesn't seem like a long time for fans because we're enjoying all sorts of content, checking out other groups, arguing with each other, and speculating about rumors. It goes by quickly. Sometimes we even forget to fully appreciate these groups before they decide it's time to do other things.

For idols, it's a different story. They have intense schedules. Even keeping up with the image is a lot of work. They might want to go their own trajectories. The best we can hope for is that they're dedicated to the group enough to keep it going in some capacity.
