Is anyone else surprised at the fact that the 3rd generation groups have been more consistent and stable than the 2nd gen?

  • By this, I mean that the 3rd generation groups have been quite strong. TWICE still have their 9 of their members and its their 8th year, BP has all of their members and it’s their 7th year, BTS has all of their members and RV as well. I remember back then in 2018 in this forum, there were lots of users saying BP would be the first one to lose members, etc but all of that aged like milk. I think it’s also because the general public isn’t too harsh anymore about stuff like dating scandals.

  • No I'm not shocked, it's a change of times, a lot of major changes happened to kpop in 3rd gen, especially with companies, plus hella groups got big in 3rd gen, so big, any company would be a fool to give them up so easily. Imagine if twice just disbanded, where would JYP be today? It's a freaking good thing that all these older groups are still here, and are still pulling in huge numbers, BTS are still killing it, and they debuted in 2013! the dedication of fandoms have also shifted, keeping older groups together much longer is way easier now.

  • third generation had by far the most innovative and unique music and concepts in all of kpop so it totally makes sense they're going strong now

they didnt need to mindlessly create and follow trends and/or copy western music unlike other gens, so their fanbases are not fickle and dont jump ship

  • No, gen 1 got got things started and showed potential but needed improvement. Gen 2 experimented a lot and some of it worked and some of it didn't. Gen 3 used what it learned from gen 2 but played it a little safer so there are a ton of hits but a little less personality. Gen 4 is all about analytics calculated by humans to create a few megs hits. Gen 5 is AI and the simulation implodes.

  • I started following kpop in 2016, and for me was obvious from the start 3rd gen were going to be much bigger than 2nd gen

If 3rd gen groups did not have more longevity than 2nd gen groups then kpop was a doomed and unsustainable industry

Most of 2nd gen groups had to survive with a country of 60 million people where at best 20 million used to listen to idols, and few of them cared enough for them to spend a penny buying their stuff

Third gen had the opportunity to collect fans abroad which is enough to offset the fact Korean interest in idols is short lived

I guess this is where we say Kpop has grown, it attracts more fans than it used to and has better offers in different ways than it used to which gives idols more longevity than it used to :pepe-shrug: so all that is expected.

  • nah, the only surprise is how quickly kpop matured as an industry. gone are the days of being a poor man's jpop, obvious ripoff songs and just general flimsiness of the first 2 gens.

My 2nd gen favs never did that but ok :starec:

  • I don't know if comparing different gens for a winner will ever work.

There's no better gen imo because all are different and run under different circumstances. Some with more advantages than others and the newer ones using what the older gens did/made to do better and grow Kpop further into the future.

  • Nah, not at all. The market has grown tremendously since second gen so that there’s more of the whole pie to try to get a slice out of. So of course each participant will have better longevity after securing their share of the market compared to the previous gen, from the top dogs to the smaller and even nugu groups alike.

Yes, even nugus can band together now, go to Germany or the US etc and have a Kpop concert with 5/6 groups performing.

People will come because there are lots of multis in the west.

  • No, it's not surprising at all, actually. In fact, the opposite: it's the same reason as why boy groups used to be more stable and last longer than girl groups in previous gens.

A larger global K-pop market means more longterm revenues and stable income for all idol groups, boy groups AND girl groups: meaning they can last longer, and aren't required to diversify their activities and jump onto other ventures and career paths to make a living.

  • No it’s not surprising. It’s simply because there’s more money to make. If you don’t like your job but you make a lot of money, you’ll think twice before leaving it.

  • It's not just their touring or selling ability that is keeping the group alive but the companies themselves that are holding into them back in the days companies would abandon their succeful groups for the new shiny toy but it's not the case with generation if Red Velvet had debuted during second gen believe it that Sm would have shelved them for Aespa, companies understoo that two money makers are better than one

  • T_T I still miss NU'EST since Pledis fucked up !

But I'm happy that everyone is releasing solo music now (even tho for Aron there is just 1 song out at the moment)

A lot other smaller groups I know who debuted before 2018 also disbanded quit quickly and some didn't even lasted a full year or just didn't made any music at all. And some of the smaler onces who are still together feel like dead cause you almost hear nothing of them anymore
