Are prerelease songs bsides or singles?

  • Most people refer to prerelease songs as bsides

It doesn't make sense to me

They get their own MV, their own promo and even a head start to collect streams.

In any other music industry that's called a single

  • kpop world is bit different

if they promote it in music shows then it's single

if it get small/mid budget MV but without promotion then it's just a b-side

  • To me, the quality tends to be more “B-Side”.

A “lead single”, in other countries, works in the same way but usually has more “A-Side” quality.

  • If it has an official MV, it's a single. No ifs ands or buts.

KPOP MVs are probably the single biggest cost item when it comes to promotion for a song. Everyone talks about YT's decline but the fact remains, most official MVs still get millions, if not tens of millions, even hundreds of millions of views and companies spend real cash to use ads for them. That's a single.

ETA: and even if the prerelease doesnt have a MV, chances are it's still a single. I would be very strict about giving a song the label of a "bside" if it is being released before any of the other songs of an album. To me, the only time i even hear this is when a song underperforms and stans of the group call it a "bside" to make excuses for the underperformance. I even saw some Ive stans on TW making pre excuses for Kitsch, they were probably worried that the song would flop.

  • The way I understand it, and this isn't based on Kpop, but the West:

A single is a digital track that isn't from an album. For example, Rihanna has not dropped an an album but recently for the Black Panther 2 movie she did release a Single "Life Me Up". The meaning itself is in the word "Single" meaning it's a stand alone track.

A pre-release Single, on the other hand, is a b side that is apart of an album but is being released as a stand alone track in anticipation for the actual album. This is very common in the West where they will often release 2-3 pre-release singles with MVs and full promotion and everything all for one album.

    tldr: there is overlap

  • Depends if they promote it or not, If 2 songs are released at once both with mvs and one is called a bside no1 would question it.

Only real difference is its released first so both can shine.

  • B side itself has its own meaning in kpop.

Idc what people want to call it. But it’s only weird when people say “a b side did that” or “it’s only a b side so it’s ok

I don’t care what you call it but these are no different than a title track so don’t pretend they are. That’s all that matters to me.
