I would think they are extremely world famous and mainstream. Even though the content of their songs is different on purpose. I feel like most people who are fans of them would think of them as mainstream rather than thinking it is alternative to like them. And think of them as "another popular group" rather than an alternative choice to the popular.
At least in my case the one post about Sullyoon being pretty really helped them to be familiar to me so I think that really helped them to feel popular. After that it's like at least I know one member of the group or something about them, so I can kind of feel like I know them when I watch them and not just see a group of people that all look the same. (like how I get familiar with other k-pop groups)
With the new comeback they have been seeming to do a commentary along the lines of: evil forces want to start a monopoly and assimilate music/art and make it all feel the same. People will accept this willingly because it appears perfect, it is popular, it is "so sweet they won't be able to think of anything", and it "makes them feel complete". In the end human beings will "lose their diversity". After consuming the content they will eventually fall unconscious and gradually become "indistinguishable from the candy". (at this point the allusion to reality seems to reach its limit, cause humans transforming into entertainment or snacks doesn't make sense. ((I also don't get why they show Nswers as dolphins, that can be trapped in small glass containers. Maybe to show our true size and power in a large open sea/world.)). But, I guess "transforming" could make sense if you think of "candy" as ideology, people all consume the same ideology and eventually fully believe it, so that it seems like an absolute truth inseparable from daily existence)
So they try to send a message that they are different from the rest and will in fact illuminate us from drudgery and one monopoly over ideas. But I still think they are mainstream because of how they are perceived, and because they express this idea in a Disney-like way with a ton of colors and fantasy elements that are similar to childhood stories/fairytales. I'm not sure they are intentionally going against the grain enough to be not like other girls.
