However, as an idol working in Korea, I do agree that she should've been more understanding of the sensitive sentiments between Korean-Chinese relations and that she should've been more careful. It's good that she posted an apology quickly. Knowing her usual personality and character, I truly think this mistake happened out of not knowing Eastern customs since she's more accustomed to Western customs.     Although mostly raised in the US, I'm Korean and even born in Korea. I didnt even know what Lunar New Year was until i was older, it's always been Chinese New Year for me.

    maybe the western world, but the western world tends to know jackshit about Asia. I think that the knetz comments are mostly xenophobia and racism but it's also bordering on racism to ignore the cultural differences in Asia

    In my country we don't call it like that, we just use Chinese calendar of which animals year it is lol if I saying this correctly or is this called Chinese new year?

    Holy... And these racists wanted Danielle to apologise for saying something "inappropriate"? Are they listening to themselves? I hope they're penning their own apologies as we speak. But what am I saying... Of course they aren't. They're probably really proud of themselves.

    I think this might be a sensitive topic to some Koreans due to Korea's history of being colonized and subjugated by both China and Japan. Under Japanese rule, Koreans weren't allowed to celebrate their Seollal and it was only re-established as a national holiday in the last 40 years. Reclaiming it was a point of pride. To some, it's just a silly fun holiday. To others, it's a symbol of something greater and calling it Chinese would erase that.

    I’m not ignorant. Nobody is telling u on ur national holiday. Where did my statement said such? I didn’t say anything wrong. The lunar new year originated from the Chinese lunar solar calendar as per history and that’s all I know, so it’s not wrong to say its origin from China. Read up on Korean new year roots and influences.


    Nobody is saying she shd say happy Chinese new year, since every culture celebrate it and yes she shd be careful since she is in Korea. But regardless of whether calling happy Chinese new year is racist or not, it’s not intentional since it’s widely known as such from where’s she’s from, and their xenophobic reactions are uncalled for even after being corrected abt it.


    Edit: I’m just stating what I have researched. Every culture has their own form of holiday separately, but I’m just noting the original influences. Also Ik that it’s year of cat for vietnamese ppl and not for Chinese.

    I did a quick google, and that's what came up. I didn't say if it was accurate or not, I just pointed out what google is gonna spit out if you go searching for yourself. You can't get mad and then turn around and not even slightly bother to correct the rampant misinformation that I literally just gave an example of.     over here its only been recently being changed to lunar new year in the public mind I dunno about other commonwealth countries.

    The google post isn't confusing though. It says that the term is interchangeable in China and Chinese communities. What is confusing about it? I also disagree with your other post coz you say that your point is that this was an example of misinformation. It's not misinformation if you read the whole sentence unless you think that "in China and Chinese communities" = Asia which was my whole point.

    A lot of overseas Chinese use Chinese new year to help distinguish it from the solar new year which others just call "new years"

    Only is it recently (thx to 99ranch market and other Chinese supermarkets) starting to push "lunar new year" marketing rather than "Chinese new year" marketing to change the public's label of it. Korean supermarkets are pushing the same to help decrease the conflation.


    Other initiatives don't seem to be as effective or noticeable at all. its just the supermarkets in our area that create the most difference because ppl shop a lot there in day-to-day life.

    Koreans refusal to say Chinese New Year is understable if we read about how their culture was formed during the centuries. Idols need to learn and be careful about their words, mostly the ones with korean blood.
    But this is not a big deal imo. This massive hate are coming from 40s men, and their ultranationalism, they are not NJ's public. Young koreans will accept the apology and move on.

    but an interesting caveat is that Danielle is from the Hampyeong Mo clan. I don't know if many fans know this but if someone from a prominent Chinese family (for example jack ma's son or smth) said "what are you doing for Seollal" blood'll be drawn in the streets if it get viral. well not that dramatic but they're losing massive face.


    The saving grace is that Danielle isn't strictly Korean born and raised because her dad brings a lot of Australian influence being Australian and her dad so there's leeway in that when considered.


    edit: I think this is a honest mistake by Danielle and that people should forgive her. Nationalism of this sort does nothing good in the long run.
