There is this big myth that girl groups have "gp" but that's not at all true. Fragile male ego is why ggs retain more attention than bgs.

  • Not that I was inspired to make this thread by male kpop fans who make it their badge of honor to be "girl group only uwu" but there is a discussion to be had. There is no "GP" narrative for girl groups as people have been led to believe. The only difference that set them apart is men are more likely to check out cute girls/beautiful women than other men. Even if music from boy groups are the greatest thing on earth, if casual male listeners don't trust the band ex. BigBang, they most likely won't even give bgs a chance because they have fragile egos. That is why on average, ggs gets both MALE and FEMALE tuning in, while a select few bgs ex. BB, BTS, Beast/Highlight/Block B/BTOB might or might not get the same level of attention from men as ggs do by default. That is also why there is always a HUGE and HIGH turnover rate for ggs than bgs. Because majority of men will move on to the next shiny and pretty gg that has buzz and hype around them. It has happened way too often to deny that hypothesis.

Long story short, everyone is considered the general population, ggs just have a more equal percentage of men and women tuning into their songs than bgs who have a larger female audience. Except for a select few who men can trust musically, on a toss up, to give their music a chance too, the "gp" narrative is a myth for ggs. I think the right term people need to start using is "casual listening" or "casual fans" because that's generally what is keeping most ggs afloat until the new shiny comes out.

  • I can See that Brave Girls have many male fans because the Girls are much more prettier than the other groups.

But why did sexy concept die and why is Brave Girls not on no1 if horny males would really be a major thing in Kpop?

From 150 Songs in my playlist 2 are from Boy groups. So its not that i dont listen to them. But i would never join a Boy group fandom. To much hate, toxic and numbersfetish (similar to top Girl groups) but most of all. I dont even like it in the girl groups fandoms If they hybe the visuals. but the open gaze about the Boys body and assets is much worse than what I have seen in any Girl group fandoms.

I guess you were asleep that day in biology class. ¬‿¬

K-Pop boy groups are virtually all given effeminate styling and content to appeal to (and not scare away) big-spending 13-year-old female audiences who want to see cute, anime-like characters on stage - exactly what about these groups is supposed to be of interest to male viewers?

Girl groups are far more universal in their styling and music, with a few young-focused exceptions. So of course they appeal to wider audiences. But don't forget - K-Pop is only tangentially about music. It is a digital audio-visual art form that is in the business of constantly presenting shiny new baubles to distract audiences away from competitors' offerings.

  • Strictly Korea speaking, every since the dawn of time it just so happened that korean groups are more targeted towards girls. Their styling, looks and concept kinda alienated their male counterparts. And also, it all comes from stereotypes cause clearly there are boygroups like the ones you've mentioned that the GP is tuning (boys & girls), but unfortunately they're only 'chosen ones'.

And if we include the rest of the world, kpop as a whole is a niche and mainly fandom-driven, so I guess it evens out everything? I mean in SK, ggs have more success, but outside the border bgs have more success.

Tbh this is even incorrect. Ggs are the ones owning the international streaming charts too.

All what bgs have going for them is the physical sales

maybe girl groups are not more universal in their styling and music. but the girls surely dont alienate male fans with acting like they are your boy friend.

  • I disagree. Girl groups also have more female listeners than boy groups.

    Today (2023.01.02) on Melon:

Ditto (highest girl group song [#1]): 344,259 female listeners

Event Horizon (highest soloist song [#3]): 190,112 female listeners

Candy (highest boy group song [#7]): 161,489 female listeners

Ditto even has more female listeners than Candy has in total.

If any boy group song had as many female listeners as Ditto, it would be at least #4.

If any boy group song had as many female listeners as Event Horizon, it would be at least #12.

But the next boy group song after Candy at #7 is Dynamite at #63.

You only need 55,682 listeners to enter the top 100, but boy groups can barely enter.

So why aren't women listening to boy groups?

  • Well, as an man and kpop fan, I pretty much only listen to and follow the girlgroups.

    Why?

    1. Yes, it's acctually do feels a bit weird for me look at "pretty young boys" with a lot of makeup dancing around in MVs. It's just hard not to. (yes, I do realize it can be a bit weird for a mature man to look at young kpop girls that could be my daughters). So in this case the OP got it right.

    2. In my opinion the style of the music between the BG and GG are different. The BG in general is a bit slower in tempo, deeper and with a bit more rock and RnB influence (I think at least). The GG in comparsion have a lighter, higher tempo pop/electro sound to suits my taste better.

It's can't be a huge suprise of anyone that females are more likely to follow girlgroups than men follow boygroups.....

But the men "move on to the next shiny and pretty gg" is maybe a bit too much. The music is more important for me than the looks of the group members.

  • So why aren't women listening to boy groups?

I don't follow boygroups, but I have the impression the quality and popularity of the boygroups have declined since the a couple of years back? Or, the BTS domination have been so big that they have put all other groups in the shadow and it's hard for the rest of the groups to get popular and grow a big fan base.

  • Eh, boygroups have since years been more and more marketed towards females in both image and music/lyrics, why would the average heterosexual male be interested in an idol boygroup? Its abit like asking why more women arent interested in porn which is mainly targeted towards men.

You mention bigbang as an example, a group that never really marketed themselves as boyfriend fantasy or played up the role much, and who had women acting as girlfriends or the like in many of their videos and on stage. How many active boygroups today have even one mv released with anyone of the opposite gender in it? They avoid it because its not part of the image/fantasy companies work so hard to sell begin with.

Women and men differ in interests and also how they pursue them. Even most of the girlgroups today have more female fans than male, and id say most new girlgroups are primarily marketed towards women, not men.

Edited once, last by Kreatin ().

  • I'm sure it has nothing to do with all the stereotypes around what specifically "boybands" are and who supposedly like them and for what reasons. It's almost universally uncool to say you follow a boyband lest that brand you because of the prevalent stereotypes about what it says about you. And trust me, all age groups and genders get slagged off equally as bad if they admit to this with boybands.

Are there stereotypes around girl groups? Hell yes, but the stereotyping a fan of them would receive is for the most part nowhere near as vitriolic (save for adult men). And let's be honest, the stereotype of men just being in it cause of liking hot young girls" is still seen in a better light than the homophobic stereotype they get with a boyband.

EDIT: this is just highly saracastic OP and not a reflection of me diasgreeing with the central principle in OP

  • Yeah I think toxic masculinity is part of it. The male perspective and values are always dominant and determines what’s consider okay and not okay to like…
