Not that I was inspired to make this thread by male kpop fans who make it their badge of honor to be "girl group only uwu" but there is a discussion to be had. There is no "GP" narrative for girl groups as people have been led to believe. The only difference that set them apart is men are more likely to check out cute girls/beautiful women than other men. Even if music from boy groups are the greatest thing on earth, if casual male listeners don't trust the band ex. BigBang, they most likely won't even give bgs a chance because they have fragile egos. That is why on average, ggs gets both MALE and FEMALE tuning in, while a select few bgs ex. BB, BTS, Beast/Highlight/Block B/BTOB might or might not get the same level of attention from men as ggs do by default. That is also why there is always a HUGE and HIGH turnover rate for ggs than bgs. Because majority of men will move on to the next shiny and pretty gg that has buzz and hype around them. It has happened way too often to deny that hypothesis.
Long story short, everyone is considered the general population, ggs just have a more equal percentage of men and women tuning into their songs than bgs who have a larger female audience. Except for a select few who men can trust musically, on a toss up, to give their music a chance too, the "gp" narrative is a myth for ggs. I think the right term people need to start using is "casual listening" or "casual fans" because that's generally what is keeping most ggs afloat until the new shiny comes out.
