AOA and EXID is not a 3rd gen group

  • i know they debut the same year as EXO but we cant just include them on the 3rd gen rank.. it doesnt make sense for them (AOA and EXID) to be compare with Twice RV and Gfriend, the gap is just too big.

there's really no way exid, aoa, and apink are 3rd gen. 2.5 gen has been recognized since the ages by the kpop community. i've always think of 2.5 gen as the transitionary period, from the idol culture of 2nd gen to 3rd gen.even the koreans agree that they belong to 2.5 gen which consist of other top gg like APINK and Girls Day

the moment when both exid and aoa reached their highest peak, both twice and blackpink is still not debut

  • "the moment when both exid and aoa reached their highest peak, both twice and blackpink is still not debut"

alright i will say as someone who was/is a fan of all groups mentioned here, this is true.

both exid and aoa had some of their best songs before twice and bp debuted.

    exid:

    - up & down

    - hot pink (a little after twice debut though)

    - ah yeah

    aoa:

    - miniskirt

    - short hair

    - like a cat

    - heart attack

idk what this means for generations though but i will say that statement is true and i don't feel like those groups can be lumped together. for whatever that's worth haha.

  • I thought 2nd gen was 2007-2012, 3rd gen 2013-2018, and 4th gen 2019-present or did I pull that out of my arse?

  • i think the actual years are pretty debated, that's why some people say there's a 2.5 gen and why i made a thread about 3.5

Oh yeah I agree that their are edge years to it to transition.

  • Wut? They're not even the beginning of 3rd gen for GGs. Brave Girls and Apink are the first 3rd gen groups in Kpop. Then AOA and EXID and then Mamamoo and Red Velvet.

3rd gen (2011 - 2017) = BG, Apink, AOA, Exid, RV, MMM, Gfriend, Twice, BP, IOI, Momoland

4th gen (2018 - 2024) = Idle, Loona, Izone, Itzy, Everglow, Stayc, Aespa, Ive, Kepler, NMIXX, LSRFM, New Jeans

5th gen will start in 2025 with BTS returning. It will be truly multinational and diverse with all races and multiple ethnicities represented, as well as queer A list idols bursting onto the scene.

  • Generations have NEVER been based on Gender, so the 3rd Gen started with EXO in 2012

What group started the 4th Gen?

  • AOA only really found success after they drastically changed their concept in 2014 for Miniskirt. I can accept 2.5 but surely their prime was closer to 3rd gen days then 2nd gen.

  • The Majority consensus on this is along the lines of

    1st Gen - Groups who debut 1992 - 2002 (11 years)

    2nd Gen - Groups who debut 2003 - 2011 (9 years)

    3rd Gen - Groups who debut 2012 - 2017 (6 Years)

    4th Gen - Groups who debut 2018 - 2022 (5 Years already)

In less than a Fortnight 4th Gen will have 6 Years assigned to them, as many as 3rd Gen did when 4th Gen started

Theoretically a claim could be made that 5th Gen begins next year based on the above information and trends

My Biggest Problem with that List above is after a couple short years the Leading Kpop Acts switched to Representatives of the New Era

2nd Gen Timeline (2003-2011) was quickly dominated by 2nd Gen Acts

3rd Gens Timeline (2012-2017) was quickly dominated by 3rd Gen Acts

4th Gens Timeline so far has been dominated by 3rd Gen Acts (BlackPink and BTS)

in fact 2022 is the First Year I felt that 4th Gen Groups were remotely comparable to the 3rd Gen Groups

I suspect people jumped the Gun on anointing a 4th Gen with very little evidence to support it
