Why Is Hate So Normalized On The Internet(incl Kpop)???

This is something I've been wondering for a while. Why do you guys think hate is so normalized in the internet world? Especially in communities like kpop fandoms, sports fandoms, pop fandoms, reddit, literally every form of internet.

We have people getting unnecessary hate, getting canceled for the most stupid reasons, but no one really calls it out and it's very normalized on the internet.

Is it the fact that people can talk crap about people/harass and not face any real consequences? The feeling of anonymity? The animal in humans?

What do you guys think?

It's the disconnect that the internet provides. Because you're not physically present with the person you're talking to, you feel embolden to say negative and hateful things because you can depersonalize the interaction. I work in a call center and I've noticed this when dealing with customer service over the phone vs. my time doing work in retail stores. I've been yelled at both by customers over the phone and in person in a store and the things I've said said to my face by angry customers in stores pales in comparison to the vitriol I've received as a faceless voice on the phone.

The (believed) anonymity of the internet and the depersonalization just breeds negativity.

hate it normalized everywhere it's just that people are more brave on the internet because they're normally aren't consequences for treating people badly. you can just close the tab or log off, but it's more difficult to walk away from a person you're actually talking to

That's a really interesting comparison. Sorry that you had to face all of that. I think in general it's easy to disrespect/hate on people you don't really know. I've seen my parents get easily annoyed on those calls easily while in real life, say at a store it's really hard to get them in that behavior.

I think a part of it is that hate gets more clicks and attention, because it provokes a stronger reaction from us. Because it gets more attention, the internet thinks that’s what we want to see, even if it’s not really, and as a result, pushes it even more for more people to see, thinking they might be interested since it’s popular, and it just cycles out of control.

This is human nature. This type of behavior is best thought of as a spectrum with various people having different levels and also different levels of conscience regarding it. Polite society restricts such behavior, though there are some who are on the extreme end of the spectrum that DGAF and are like this IRL. For others though, when there are no (or less) consequences, the dark side of human nature can creep out and manifests in them doing and saying things they normally would not want to be censured for.

People don't have to see the reaction to their words, they're just looking at a bunch of words on a screen. It makes it easier to say vile things when you don't have to see the reaction in the other person. And if the response gets too much, it's far too easy to delete the account/close the browser/log off etc and end the conversation and not have to continue facing consequences.

Especially since people keep throwing "free speech" around as if that's an excuse or reason to be shitty.
