I originally posted this thought in the random thoughts thread, but after chatting more about it with YouChanDoThis I decided to create an individual thread about it since it is rather important information that probably should be shared. Not many people know about MBTI well and have false conceptions about it, especially in K-pop.
Something critical to note is that MBTI is technically not a personality test, it is something that categorises your cognitive functions (the way you think) and it is not supposed to be the result of preferences and habits, leaving less room for bias. Think about the concepts of introvert and extrovert—it’s not what forms your personality, it simply categorises what recharges your batteries (alone time or social time).
I’m posting most of the conversation we had in the random thoughts thread here, so the rest of this will be formed in quotes.
Quote from bluetreeOn the topic of MBTI, as somebody who’s poked into the typology community, I’d like to spread the word that 16 Personalities is not a very accurate site and it types off preferences and habits rather than actual cognitive functions like MBTI is supposed to be.
If you’ve ever wondered why the people who are into typology and K-pop at the same time almost never agree with the official results of an idol’s MBTI test, it’s probably because when people type the idol properly it turns out way different than what 16P says.
Most idols DO use 16 personalities to take their test.
I also report this from personal experience. It tried to give my results as ESTP, ESTJ, ENFP, and ENTJ, when I’m actually (most definitely) ENTP.
Quote from YouChanDoThisTHANK YOU SO MUCH! This! This bothers me so, SO much! As someone who actually studies MBTI and cognitive functions and all that fun stuff, every time I hear 16Personalities or MBTI tests being mentioned on here, I die a little more inside. It’s about your function stack, not an inaccurate test.
I remember a Twitter post showing how Stray Kids 16Personality results changed over time. People in the comments were pointing out how they changed over time and how this must make MBTI inaccurate and so on. I never wanted to face desk harder in my life than in that moment. Also, as much as I love Stray Kids, they’re not much better, as they focus a lot on what each letter means and use it to compare themselves to each other. At least I have the excuse for them of being too busy to research it.
Quote from bluetreeIt also bothers me so much because people go on about certain idols’ MBTIs off their official given results but it’s not even accurate.
And MBTI isn’t even supposed to change over time, it’s not supposed to “mature with your personality”. Proper MBTI results are supposed to be mostly consistent (if I remember correctly, do tell me if that’s wrong).
It’s extra annoying since the K-pop community and idols themselves focus on MBTI a lot, but it’s not being used properly.
Quote from YouChanDoThisI know! It’s just so infuriating to me! I wish they knew their actual type and beyond just the most surface level stereotypes. Like, I don’t want to gatekeep it, but at the same time I kind of do at this rate. Yeah, it’s not supposed to do that, I agree. How you act within your type changes, but your type itself does not. If that makes sense.
Hope that this is an informative post to everyone who views it and that it spreads some amount of awareness!
