Confirmation bias in KPOP

  • First let me put out a disclaimer, this isn't a thread that is directed to any particular issue. Yes certain issues and events maybe have got me to make this thread, but I want to talk about the bigger issue and not about specific events

With that out of the way, am I the only one who feels this about KPOP?

A confirmation bias is a type of cognitive bias that involves favoring information that confirms previously existing beliefs or biases.

Not defending anything but a lot of times I feel like people already have something that they are actively looking for, and confirms it because they already convinced themselves that it exists.

Example, bullying issues. People already think that an idol is a bully, and when new 'evidence' pops up even though they aren't even substantiated, they automatically think that it's all true and convince themselves that idols are bullies.

Plagariam issues, you already WANT TO LOOK OUT for familiar sounds/beats, and if the music sound anything remotely similar you be like "this shit is sus as fk"

This Min person. Y'all see her sus concept and see her debuting underage girls but you guys eat that shit up anyways even though its sus. You already know its sus, so it is already at the back of your mind. So when this instagram thing pops up, you immediately be like "bitch I told you so she is a p*"

Basically you already have a pre-existing thought, and when new things surface that confirms your suspicions, you feel good that you are 'proven right'

I can name other examples and drag multiple fandoms but maybe not today

    What do you guys think?

Edit: some people pointed out that it happens everywhere and yes it does. Just that since this is a KPOP forum just want to point it out things pertaining to KPOP and that many of us don't even realise it is happening

  • Sort of a side comment. Kind of related. Kind of broader than just kpop.

But I can tell I'm older and from a different generation. I see the world and thus a lot of kpop so differently than the lens most of the new fans see it through.

For a long time when one is young, even if there's a difference of opinion or identity, or circumstance, often there's still to some extent a generational shared world view or loose perspective. You get used to sharing that and assuming your peers share it.

As you get older it's striking when you notice that fall away, especially if you interact with younger people. They see things from an entirely different generational lens.

You get shocked even if you intellectually expect it.

You think? Huh.... That's how you see it? Haha. Well they're probably thinking the same thing.

They see your world view as outdated. Or wrong.

Just an interesting thing that happens eventually.

If you don't understand. Don't worry. You will someday.

Us old timers are getting there first.

    You'll catch up one day.

    :check-bee:

  • as some people have already said it happens everywhere even on akp id say fans especially have confirmation bias in the opposite direction of everything you said

    1. that they reject plagiarism before even hearing the song and believe people are overreacting

    2. believe idols are innocent no matter the evidence or accusations...some people still think garam was innocent or that she shouldnt have been kicked from the group

    3. Originally with the Min person she had a lot of support and people claiming that it was just jealous stans kicking up baseless rumors out of jealously

  • I think a lot of kpop stans are more worried about being on the side of popular opinion and get that "gotcha I knew it from the start" moment then actually researching for themselves which is why people fall for confirmation bias hard. Not only that but kpop fans don't accept when people change their opinions. If you believe one thing that's it you chose your side. People on the internet are to quick to accuse and react nastily towards those with opposing opinions.

  • It happen everywhere in the world, but in KPOP the hypocrisy is real. They will rejoice at their ones that they hate, and if their faves do the same thing they will attack the victim first

  • With that out of the way, am I the only one who feels this about KPOP?

    nope. Me too.

    What do you guys think?

This thing also makes those people denying anything that aren't going with their supported narratives.

But well, since it comes to many people and also many didn't even aware of it.... it kinda unfortunate.

Well, at least there are some people that tried to stay neutral at first and looking a problem from many kind of perspective before deciding the outcome or their act.

  • Confirmation bias in a thing everywhere but, I agree with you Op, it's so big in Kpop.

But to me it goes deeper than this.

Kpop has always been a competitive industry and the companies themselves have fueled the competition to make fans more attached to their faves. They have to make their faves 'win'.

So when there's a scandal there are two cases. If it's your fave involved, fans feel the need to protect them and defend them. It doesn't matter whether it's true or not.

And if it's someone else involved, a lot of fans feel it's a great opportunity to take out 'the opponent '. For Kpop is a race for success. And whenever there a chance to stop someone they will take it.

And when they join the angry mob ( there is always an angry mob) , they feel less responsibility for what is happening. 'it wasn't just me, they told me it was like that, I saw some posts'.

It doesn't matter if there is not enough proof, like in some bullying cases, or it doesn't matter if proof does come out debunking any accusations made. People feel some sort of exhilaration when there's drama and they feel like they can join in, masking this joy as concern. They fool themselves and they think they can fool everyone else.

And if by doing so, they lessen the chances of the opponents success, that's all the better.

In the MHJ case, there's reason for concern for sure. She has questionable taste that would make anyone wonder if it stops there. But people went from 1 to 100 and the change of opinions was so sudden that this is why a lot of us doubt three field that the concern comes from a genuine concern.
