Yep, MHJ has clearly targeted them for the West. Could be the greatest existential threat to Blackpink's dominance here... . I honestly thought it might have been Twice, who are rapidly building a strong fanbase in the US, i thought Twice's second stage of their career could be an all out assault on the US market.

But this new group is better equipped, they have Hybe's connections to the US, an image, music and concept that are all Westernized from the very start, and members who are English speakers.

Not really? Their rollout is different but still very kpop, and I can easily imagine their songs on a Red Velvet album.

Agreed, it genuinely doesn't register to me as kpop at all.

They clearly have a western influence but still keep the kpop vibe, it's actually a brilliant mix that I think will influence kpop's direction in the future. Can't wait for their actual debut

I understand what you mean but at the same time rnb and hiphop is what kpop basically originated from. So in a way, it's kind of like kpop is going back to it's roots with newjeans. I've seen lots of people compare them to s.e.s.

I agree, the western influence is found primarily in the presentation of the love plot lines/teen party concept and use of full of English phrases throughout the song; but the amount of English in kpop songs has been increasing for a while now and there's also plenty of Korean as well

Certainly kpop represents a lot of different things in its style (notably its fusion of Western trends and styles interlaced with Korean) beyond just language (or its unique mashup of languages), but it cracks me up to say a pop song in Korean has "no kpop in it."

FWIW, I think it's clearly mirroring the style of Western 90s gg r&b, which yes, has been done in kpop in 2nd gen.

And 3rd gen.

Kpop music has been using western producers for a while now. And the NewJean songs could easily fit into a Red Velvet album. So I don't really see it being super different from the norm.

It's been quite a long time since I've felt strongly about a kpop group's music like this.

First 2 times were with BTS and BB.
