There are layers in colorism. Maybe its not outright "racist" but it sure as hell is classist. Not cute, not a better look either.

I watched the original source. The entire conversation started with the other members complimenting Chaeryeong on her bright aura and energy this comeback, and then the host started complimenting her on her looks and the contrast between her pale skin and darker hair.

They never say specifically that her getting a tan is bad, I think the point that Lia was trying to make with that neither pale nor sexy comment was that she thought Chaeryeong's "charm" was her pale complexion, and without it, she'd lose it and just have a "sexy" aura. But from my perspective as a non-Korean, that part of the conversation is just... unfortunate and cringe. How they imply that being more tanned equals being sexy is weird. They could have complimented Chaeryeong on her looks and stopped there, imo. No need to bring up something like that.

I'll never understand Koreans' obsession with skin color and constantly bringing it up. But like superyeah said, this is unfortunately ingrained in their society and if we keep scrutinizing everything "problematic" that is said by Korean celebrities, we'll never be satisfied. I do agree that given how big kpop is outside Korea now, that they should be more careful with what they say. This was of course a Korean radio show, but nowadays things get translated and spread. Not saying it's their job to change the entire Korean society and their mentality, but avoiding bringing up skin color (and weight, for that matter) would be a good start.

kpop and kdramas are even more focus on fair skin than 2nd gen. Watch kdramas from 2010 times and they look normal complexion. But kdramas these days will make everyone look super fair like white color.

Even putting like that, it doesn’t look any better I don’t think she meant in a bad way but yikes however there’s nothing wrong with yeji’s comments, Chaeryeong looks paler than ever and she’s right

i hate tanning too

i love outdoor exercise so i get tanned quite a bit during summer

i dont like the look but its not something i'd abandon exercise over

but tanning in general is NOT good for your skin

at worst you'll get skin diseases

at best your skin will age fast

so yes unless its unavoidable or the alternatives are worse, i think its reasonable to not like tanning

I do think colorism should be addressed but would you take offense if someone says members X doesn’t look good in green hair? Yeah sure it’s mean to say it so I’ll judge it but there isn’t the history of racial prejudice behind it so I don’t judge with the same lens.

Colorism is indeed more severe than green hair I acknowledge it but it also doesn’t have the same racial or ethnic connotations that’s present in some western countries.

So yeah you should condemn it. Because it’s not nice to comment on it. Absolutely. But be aware also that you are consuming entertainment from another country who have their own morals and struggles and things that are extremely shocking to you aren’t necessarily extremely shocking to them.

everyone ( except real saints who are rare ) has visual preferences, most of the times not so subtle

At this point y'all should accept that born & bred Koreans are always going to prefer white skin to whatever else cause it's literally ingrained in them
