Part of it has to do with just following standards. Most groups have it so companies feel the need to put positions. Slowly the trend is fading though as more and more new groups come out without any official positions
The issue also comes down to individual fans/fandom. Not everyone makes an issue out of it.
Fans go crazy over "role switches" I love seeing non rappers wrap. I love hearing rappers sing.
Positions are fine if fans don't make a big deal out of it. It's one of those kinda unnecessary things like...individual member's representative colors... but if it's there you can work with it. Most of my groups the fans love roles are switched, line distribution changes, etc. You just always have that 1 fan that makes a deals out of it.

imo it really only applies while the groups are rookies. Once they hit their 3rd or 4th year on then it becomes more malleable in terms of what everyone does. I think as long as they do what suits the song best then that's fine.

I guess that the people who did that was the solo stan or the people who want equality no matter what.
For solo stan, yea they would use it as a tool on their argument, because the position was kinda like the member's right? the member's part? So they would be mad if their favs didn't get enough or even didn't get any of that part.
For those who want equality, I don't know what's their problem? It might just how the way they are. Wanting everything as in order or didn't want to see any imbalance of screen time between the members?
And yeah, I agree with you, as long as the song turns out good then, that's it.
