Do you guys ever wonder if companies assign idols their personalities?

I think sometimes they do and sometimes they try to select members for their different personalities but if it’s different from what they want they tell them what kind of image they’re supposed to have

An intern who once worked in YGE said that they had a group project of creating the next YGE group(this was back in 2012), they had to describe in detail what each member's individual concept would be, the group concept, each member's personal fashion, how each member reacts and talks to fans differently etc. She says "Kpop groups are manufactured to a T, like every detail is thought of ahead of time". The project wasn't actually used by the company, just an intern thing is what she said.

I’m not sure if they do but it used to be a thing companies did before. Lol I never forget the Inspirit inside jokes about L (the cool serious guy image the company gave him) vs Myungsoo (cute and cheeky).

Yes they do, especially for debut.

Even for BTS at their debut, Jin was supposed to go for that cold cool prince vibe. Glad they dropped that shit earlier on because his real personality is more lively, way colorful and interesting

It is a known fact that they do as many idols have talked about it. In the earlier debut years the company enforces the personality they assigned to each member but as time goes on the company relaxes and the idol's personality starts to show

Ofc they do, the aim of kpop groups is to also sell an image and each member has one.

Maybe after a few years in their career the companies won't enforce anymore a personality on the members.

Of course they do. You can see the types in the group, just as you can any bg, Kpop or otherwise: the boy next door, the boyfriend, the bad boy, the cute nerd, the cool artsy guy, the sexy one, the "baby" (the youngest one).

The most interesting thing to me is at the groups get older and more successful, there's room for these personas to slip and slide. Which makes them a crack-up in hindsight. Watching early NCT Life where they try to position Taeyong, lover of SpongeBob and stuffies, as a tough guy bad boy is a crack-up. Less funny is Jaehyun's transformation from cute giggly dork to aloof perfect prince (which he even talked about being stressful). It's nice to see that both of them are now allowed to be and feel comfortable being their glorious dorky selves.
