It's interesting how this Cyworld award, unlike the Gaon award, allowed a song to win Song of the Month for more than one month. What song's do you guys think would accomplish this for the current era? From recent times I think Rollin would have been able to do it last year.

Dynamite and Rollin definatley would've won for for more than one month since they are the only songs to be no.1 on melon's monthly chart three times in a row.

Chart issues apart, I also wonder if consumption of songs drop drastically, once the Year-End Award shows are over.

Invested fans have an interest in keeping the song afloat until the awards, but then they may move on.

That could be another factor, but definately not a major one. I've seen very few artists with a fandom of any significant size with such dedicated fans, and even they have shown that their dedication is limited to the first few weeks of a song's release. And the fact that songs from 2019 such as IU's "Blueming" or Jang Beom-June's "Your shampoo scent in the flowers" showed no drastic change from 2019 to 2020 but fell more than 70 spots from the end of 2020 to the start of 2021 when clearly the 2 mentioned artists(especially the latter) don't have a fanbase as dedicated can only mean that some sort of manipulation happened on Gaon's part.

Interesting. Maybe they count one download per user for certifications then? But the download chart is revenue based with no filters.

Yes, this seems to be the case.

The sites in the picture are all used in at least one chart in Gaon. Youtube for instance is used for the social chart.

That's so weird, I knew BWL was charting higher.

Gaon has been really inconsistent ever since they started to hide their streaming/download data; especially with their download chart. It seems that they changed something again at the start of last year. If you take a look at songs like Blueming or Eight, they were doing very well on the download chart until the end of 2020 but they did a sudden nose dive on the second week of 2021 and never recovered since.

It's not just IU's songs either. Many songs that had been doing just fine a week before suddenly disappeared from the chart entirely. A similar event happened with FLO last year, when they changed the way their charts worked without any notice beforehand. But FLO received many complaints about it and they restored the original chart. I don't know if people don't know about what Gaon is doing or just don't care enough to do anything about it, but I don't think Gaon should be making changes to charts any time they feel like it, especially considering that they don't even reveal their data anymore.

Im pretty sure gaons problem with youtube is they need filtered data in a way that youtube doesnt provide(ul/24h), anything else doesnt work with their existing dataset.

While 1 stream might equal whatever the revenue is in won (and same for downloads). Gaon obviously filters streams by ul/24h, otherwise the chart would look very different. So in the end the digital score doesnt really reflect how much revenue a song is making.

Gaon has said that their digital points are basically revenue made by a song.

And it seems that ever since Gaon has hidden the streaming count and downloads, the respective charts aren't in order of most streams/downloads, but in how much revenue a song makes from streams/downloads.

This is a comparison of the two songs "Boy with luv" and "For lovers who hesitate" on the download chart:

2019 download chart(2019.01~2019.12): Boy with luv>For lovers who hesitate

2020.10 download chart: Boy with luv>For lovers who hesitate

    forum.allkpop.com/suite/attachment/164727/

2020.11 download chart: Boy with luv>For lovers who hesitate

This means that, if the download chart only takes into account how many times a song is downloaded in a certain period of time, "Boy with luv" must inevitably have more downloads than "For lovers who hesitate" whithin the period of 2019.01~2020.11. However "For lovers who hesitate" was certified for 2.5 million downloads on 2020.12, while "Boy with luv" was not(Boy with luv was certified in 2021.04). This means that the download chart isn't in order of pure download counts, and some other aspect is taken into account. Most likely the chart is in order of revenue from downloads.

In short: Gaon's download charts aren't in order of pure download counts. Proof: "Boy with luv" charts higher than "For lovers who hesitate", but the former has less actual downloads than the latter.

It's actually number 5. The Melon app only shows seperate lists of domestic songs and international songs. This is the full list.

IU has a tied record of having the most songs in melon year end chart(10 songs) along with BTS(2020) and Big Bang(2015, including 2 GDxTaeyang songs). I was kind of hoping that My sea(101) might make number 100 with higher downloads, but no such luck. Still, her performance last year has been outstanding.

That thought never occurred to me. That could be an explantion, but it seems very inefficient. It's not like the award results are revealed real time in the show. There's plenty of time to notify the winners after the results are decided. It's also quite funny to imagine artists taping acceptance speeches for awards they didn't win.

MAMA is more rigged than SMA looking at how they rigged so much over the years.

Is that so? I'm very under informed about award shows and their histories. I'll have to do some research before making any decisions. The only thing I've heard about MAMA is from some of IU's Korean fans of how IU was supposed to win a daesang in 2014 but ended up with an "achievement award" and IU has not attended MAMA since then. I don't know if this is true and I don't know of any other examples of MAMA "rigging" their awards, but looking at just this year's award shows, SMA was the most disappointing of the major award shows.

Lolololol all the award shows you mentioned are extremely rigged. There is nothing more rigged than MAMA voting. And ASK JYP fans whether they like MMA lol. Melon and their internal data are iconic.

Out of the ones you mentioned only Gaon has not had ‘rigged’ controversy because they only give awards according to their chart.

At least the award shows I've mentioned don't decide the winners before votings are completed. And while I agree that GDA, MMA, MAMA are rigged to some extent, the forementioned award shows at least tried to make it look like they follow their criteria. SMA didn't even try to make it look convincing.

Apparently, It's common from SMA. So people are more like "Disappointed, but not surprised". Also, people could choose to pay or not. They were still able to vote watching ads.

I see. Though it is still difficult for me to understand why fans would spend real money in votes that don't get counted and more importantly how SMA gets away with it.

It really seems like the only award shows with any kind of credibility are GDA, MMA, MAMA and Gaon.

I have no problem with judges having their favorites, I think the weirdest situation is that the winners' who didn't attend did their speech a month ago when the voting was still happening. I mean, why ignoring 30% of the criteria like that.

I don't think this is getting enough attention. The votes included paid votes, did they not? If they were not counted, SMA has essentially committed fraud.

Or perhaps this is a very common habit of award shows and fans are used to it by now?(though if this is the case I don't understand why fans would let award shows get away with it) I'm not familiar with how award shows work and would appreciate it if anyone enlightened me.

I understand why IU only released this mini digitally (it's essentially song leftovers so she start her 30s without musical baggage) but it would've been nice for fans to do a limited physical release or offer the album on vinyl.

There is a documentary that includes a CD of her album that is on sale right now. Check it out if you're interested.

However, Be'O and the SMTM crew taught the Senior Singer that she cannot just release anything and expect to reach #1 in Melon every time.

Well to be fair Winter Sleep did manage to reach no.1 in melon real chart, top 100 and daily along with a no.1 for Gaon weekly.

I'm more surprised with how Drama is doing. It's charting very well for a b-side, even for IU. It's doing better than Ah puh, the most successful b-side in Lilac. It could become the second "Meaning of you".

Oh this is interesting. Do you know where these "revised versions" are, is there like a site or something?

Yes, I have links to the 2019, 2020 charts. They are in Korean though.

    2020-

    2019-

For 2018 it is a bit more complicated. In 2018, Gaon only provided data for songs in the top 100, and not many songs could chart in it for an entire year, so the data is incomplete. So there are 2 versions of the 2018 chart; one that uses only existing data and one that includes estimate data after a song has gone outside of top 100 (I was only able to find an image of the latter version)

The numbers on the left column are the 52 week digital points. The songs with red writing underneath their number are those that include estimated data.

    1642901919.png

For 2017 and before, Gaon didn't have digital points(at least not the same version as today). Instead they provided streaming and download data, so most chart makers used streaming data for 2013~2017 charts and download data for 2011 and 2012 charts. It doesn't seem like anyone has made a top 100 chart for 2017 and before, but the top 5 songs are:

    1. Like it(Yoon Jong-Shin)

    2. Gift(Melomance)

    3. I will go to you like the first snow(Ailee)

    4. Through the night(IU)

    5. You, clouds, rain(Heize)

For 2016(and before), there was a way to see data for songs in the top 400. However it was blocked in mid 2016, so there are charts that include the top 400 data and charts that don't. Again, I wasn't able to find the full chart but the top 10 for 2016 are:

    1. Galaxy(Bol4)

    2. Tell me you love me(Bol4)

    3. Cheer up(Twice)

    4. TT(Twice)

    5. I don't love you(Urban zakapa)

    6. The love I committed(Im Chang-Jung)

    7. Playing with fire(Blackpink)

    8. Love that doesn't work out for me(Bol4)

    9. Beautiful(Crush)

    10. Amazing you(Han Dong-Geun)

    Top 10 for 2015:

    1. Love again(Im Chang-Jung)

    2. Me gustas tu(Gfriend)

    3. Don't worry(Lee Juck)

    4. Bang bang bang(Bigbang)

    5. Like ooh-ahh(Twice)

    6. Boys and girls(Zico)

    7. Shouldn't have(Baek A-Yeon)

    8. Eat(Zion.T)

    9. You in the same time(Naul)

    10. Heart attack(AOA)

    Top 5 for 2014:

    1. Some(Soyou, Jung-gigo)

    2. Wild flower(Park Hyo-Shin)

    3. A midsummer night's sweetness(Raina, SanE)

    4. Eyes, nose, lips(Taeyang)

    5. Up&down(EXID)

    Top 5 for 2013:

    1. Friday(IU)

    2. Growl(Exo)

    3. Stupid in love(Soyou, mad clown)

    4. Love, at first(Busker busker)

    5. No no no(Apink)

2011 and 2012 charts are based on downloads.

    Top 5 for 2012:

    1. Gangnam style(Psy)

    2. Lovey- dovey(T-ara)

    3. Cherry blossom ending(Busker busker)

    4. Blue(Bigbang)

    5. Fantastic baby(Bigbang)

    Top 5 for 2011:

    1. You & I(IU)

    2. Roly-poly(T-ara)

    3. Trouble maker(Troublemaker)

    4. I miss you(Noel)

    5. Be my baby(Wonder girls)

And the song with the most downloads in 2010 is Good day by IU.

ps. The 2021 chart will be available in 2023, but it seems that if there are no major changes, Celebrity(IU) will be number 1, followed by Next Level(Aespa) as number 2.

Yes, many Koreans who are interested in Gaon and Melon charts think this way too. That's why there are unofficial "revised versions" of yearly charts, where the first 52 weekly digital points of each song released in a particular year are lined up from highest to lowest.

For example, the top 10 of the 2020 chart would look like this:

    1. Dynamite(BTS)-1,217,968,508

    2. Eight(IU)-1,018,508,932

    3. Any song(Zico)-997,843,957

    4. Aloha(Jo Jung-Suk)-956,070,532

    5. Slighly tipsy(Sandeul)-817,370,799

    6. How you like that(Black Pink)-773,697,504

    7. Lovesick girls(Black Pink)-753,443,817

    8. Nonstop(Oh my girl)-724,061,287

    9. Start(Gaho)-713,866,220

    10. Dolphin(Oh my girl)-708,616,554

Is there any source that keeps a list of at what dates gaon certified songs, for 1xplat, 2xplat etc?

Gaon themselves only lists the last update, so earlier dates are not available on their site.

The first 2 observation notes had the achievement dates.

However they didn't want people to compare the achievement dates of songs, so they don't show them anymore. That's the reason why most lists of certified songs are in release date order, not in achievement date order, because Gaon hasn't revealed the achievement date for some songs.

For songs that have released after 2018, we know the month in which songs achieved the streaming, download milestone.

"Taeyeon best selling album has sold like 100K". That is such a straight up lie, if i remember correctly, since when Taeyeon debuted, she sold the most albums, IU album sales only skyrocketed during LILAC but before that her total album sales is on par with Taeyeon considering she debuted in late 2015

Yes, Taeyeon always had an edge over IU when it came to album sales until Love Poem came out. But then again, Taeyeon belongs to one of the most successful ggs of all time and it is astounding that a pure soloist like IU has managed to surpass her in physical sales.
