    she sold 400k recently

i wonder if it is her chinese fanbase or korean fanbase buying so many albums

IU's album sales more than doubled from Palette to Love poem, and that would be thanks to i-fans (mostly chinese). Then her sales almost doubled again for Lilac, and the cause for that would probably be the fact that the Lilac album came in 2 versions (it was the first time she released an album with multiple versions). So I think that in total, her album sales are probably half domestic and half international.

Actually Lee Sora , active in mid-1990s, sold more than a million at her heyday but at that time stats were less accurately kept.

Lee Sooyoung sold perhaps 2.5 million copies in about 7-8 albums in early 2000s. She DID win the Golden Disk-Album (at that time there was no digital award) in 2004.

Lee JIeun has a lot of way to go to follow these two acts

Lol is this guy seriously comparing IU's album sales to artists from the 1990s, when buying CDs was pretty much the only way to consume music?

I'm just writing the full list of songs by IU that has gotten a certification from Gaon(including the ones from the observation notes) and their respective streams, for anyone who's curious.

    Streaming:

    300 million-

    Through the night(356,309,754)

    200 million-

    Friday(214,013,289)

    Blueming(241,493,861)

    100 million-

Not spring, love, or cherry blossoms(185,041,691)

    The meaning of you(148,643,281)

    Twenty three(106,806,121)

    Can't love you anymore(131,680,911)

    Palette(198,531,874)

    Autumn morning(103,408,605)

    Bbi bbi(169,320,713)

    Love poem(183,942,746)

    Give you my heart(126,946,750)

    Eight(191,964,665)

    Celebrity(134,569,189)

    Lilac(106,519,355)

These numbers are minimum estimates. Excluding the fact that we don't know exactly how much 1 stream accounts for in Gaon digital points, the data itself is lacking. For songs that don't have any availabe Gaon data, Melon data was used. There are periods where neither data were available; therefore the actual streams for each song are most likley higher than the listed streams.

Palette and Eight are very close to 200 million streams. Both songs will probably be certified for 200 million streams within this year(Palette will be certified by Gaon's observation note). The same goes for love poem; it will reach 200 million streams by the end of this year or early next year.

Good day(103,172,379) and Merry christmas in advance(105,268,711) have both reached 100 million streams. However they will not be certified by Gaon because they only certify songs for streaming that have released since April of 2012 with their observation note.

Hold my hand(127,279,801) has passed 100 million streams and will be certified in the next observation note.

You and I(92,773,877) and Heart(90,647,769) are close to 100 million streams.

Check this link if you want the streaming count for all of IU's songs. (It's in Korean)

I just did the album comparison to show that IU's fandom is really not that small at least in Korea. While there is no borderline distinction between i-fans and k-fans, it is pretty obvious that IU didn't have that many i-fans in 2017.

I think IU's charting power comes mainly from her casual listeners, those that consume her music and don't do much else, and gp. The reason her first 24h uls are so high is because she has been in the music industry for a long time and has rarely disappointed listeners, therefore gaining the favor of the public. That is why when IU drops an album, people will listen to it and they will listen to the FULL album. Because the gp trusts IU to release good music.

I'm not able to find any official records for the number of fanclub members other than IU. But I'm pretty sure that's the biggest fanclub in Korea for female artists. And I can assure you that 50000 is not a small number at all. It means that IU can sell out a concert at seoul olympic stadium(the biggest stadium in korea) with just her fanclub.

I've just read through the entire thread and I guess your main question is how does IU chart so high when her album sales are low. However I don't think her album sales are low at all. The main reason her album sales look low is because she lacks internationl fans. Only since 2019 has she seen any significant rise in album sales and that was thanks to the inflow of i-fans(my guess is that hotel del luna had a big impact). Another reason would be that all of IU's albums except for LILAC were single albums(don't know if that's the right term) unlike other artists who have multiple versions of the same album.

    To prove my point:

IU's 2017 album Palette sold 100k copies. This would mostly be korean sales because this is before IU had i-fans.

In 2019, after IU gained i-fans, Love Poem sold 250k copies.

In 2021 IU released Lilac, which had 2 versions, and sold 400k copies.

I don't think 100k copies sold just in korea is small. Especially considering that IU's fans usually only buy 1 or 2 copies per album.

That would be a very good metric to measure fandoms,

    1. Fanclub memberships (of course all fans don't purchase memberships)

    2. Annual Merchandise earnings (ofc all fans don't purchase merchandise)

Where did you get the 50K number? Is it possible to get the same for other groups?

She mentions it herself in her 12th anniversary vlive. 50301 members to be exact.

This is a screenshot of the waiting list for her 'strawberry moon' merchandise on her online md store. Almost 400k people waiting in line to buy her merchansdise.

IU has more domestic fans than she is given credit for. She is currently the only female artist who can hold a concert and fill kspo dome(360°, 15000 capacity) for a full weekend. She was also planning to hold her 2020 concert at the seoul olympic stadium(40000 capacity minimum) but it was canceled due to COVID.

I think the main reason that she lacks numbers in voting is because she doesn't have that many international fans. If you look at Korea only voting(mma for instance) her votes can get pretty high.
