2022 Overseas Hallyu Survey

  • The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea International Cultural Exchange Promotion Agency (hereafter referred to as the Promotion Agency) announced the results of the ' 2022 Overseas Hallyu Survey' ( as of 2021 ) on the 14th and made this statement.

In the K-pop field, BTS has been ranked number one for the fourth consecutive year. Blackpink ( 10.4 %) came in second place, IU ( 2.8 %) in third place, Lisa of BLACKPINK in fourth place ( 2.4 %), and Psy ( 2.2 %) in fifth place.

Psy is still killing it after 9-10 years since Gangnam Style.

I think IU not being famous intentionally is an obsolete argument.

Yes, Twitter says she also figures in the Hallyu actors list at #8.

But it is been two years since Hotel Del Luna and she is at #3 among idols.

BTS and Blackpink, any comment would be to state the obvious.

  • IU!!! she ate, and Lisa?? holy shite

Non-Koreans will have an advantage over Koreans in this survey, but of course they would need to be extremely popular already.

Among BP, Lisa would have an advantage overseas at least in SEA, over the other 3.

Still it would only be few percentage points.

  • Given that Psy is still on the list, it seems this is a list of idols the foreigners know about.

It has more to do with other idols only attracting a small subset of fans in the overseas, while everyone who knows KPop has at least heard about IU through Eight, her dramas and other singers mentioning her time to time.

So other acts will have to catch up a lot.

You are sounding like those idiots who comment on under every IU content "The girl Jungkook likes", as though it is her only claim to fame.

In your case, Eight, drama etc. Did you even note that she scored higher as an idol than an actress.

  • Did anyone find the complete PDF report? I remember I had the one for 2021.

Do you have the one from 2019/2018?

Apparently IU was a non entity before Suga helped her with Eight, according to Whyknock.

But I guess, pre-Eight, it will because of dramas, or because a butterfly flapped it's wings in Botswana, any random reason..

  • Did anyone find the complete PDF report? I remember I had the one for 2021.

I did not. Still, I found a more inclusive list

  • Lalisa was strong on SE Asia

    Psy still strong in Europe

BTS topped most of the countries

    BP topped Malaysia and Indonesia

Lee Jieun topped China, where she got 7.8%, while getting 0.3% in Japan, 0.0% in France and 0.4% in Argentine. So without China, the singer who graces my avatar would have received a whooping 107 votes instead of 132, below Lalisa, Psy and Twice.

Why Lalisa and not Pranpriya, you insist on original names.

But she definitely would win SEA and by extension BP as well in the region.

Forget Uighurs or Hanbok appropriations, China should be boycotted and sanctioned for their support of Senior Singer, right ?

  • Lee Min Ho is still ranked first after all these years. i was under the impression that his popularity hasn't kept up with the growing popularity of kdramas. Seems like he still has a dedicated fanbase even though his last drama was poorly received. I was expecting Lee Jung Jae to top the list with all the buzz around him for Squid game but none of the cast made the list. The actors' list is still filled with the same people as before Song Song couple, Hyun bin, lee min ho and others

  • i find it hard to believe kmusic is 80%. Kdrama is big these days maybe all the views on illegal sites (like Kissasian, Dramacool) are not counted

Definitely not. This survey was conducted via questionnaire, no reasonable ground to conclude repliers lied they did not watch K-drama to hide piracy. They more likely lied about the platform they used.

It's way easier to listen to 3.30 minute long song than to watch 1 hour long episode of drama. Plus, music can be consumed in more diverse situations as visual sense and more attention are needed to watch a drama. You cannot watch a drama in a noisy subway or while ironing your shirt.

  • Do you have the one from 2019/2018?

Apparently IU was a non entity before Suga helped her with Eight, according to Whyknock.

The table I posted has that info but in Hangul. Anyway, I can decipher it for you.

    2018

    1. BTS 10.3%

    2. Psy 6.9%

    3. Blackpink 3.8%

    4. Big Bang 2.5%

    5. EXO 2.3%

    2019

    1. BTS 15.2%

    2. Blackpink 6.5%

    3. Psy 5.7%

    4. Twice 2.8%

    5. Big Bang 2.5%

    2020

    1. BTS 22.0%

    2. Blackpink 13.5%

    3. Psy 2.9%

    4. Twice 2.4%

    5. EXO 2.1%

The said 2022 survey actually is the 2021 survey as the survey was conducted in late 2021 but the calculation and everything finished in 2022.

  • BTS = Kings, or Emperors

Lee Jieun - Dowager Queen, Dowager Empress, whatever you want to call thanks to the infinite decision of Lee Sooman and MNet to give her the Lifetime Achievement Award

  • IU has the large advantage of being in kdramas.

As a musician most would agree she's not the 3rd biggest kpop artist worldwide.

Her Kdrama is now 3 years old and if it is Kdrama, then how come she ranks at 3 for idols and 8 for actors, instead of the other way around.

It need not be 'worldwide', she is extremely popular in China as an idol and that is enough to swing the votes.

Because kdramas have enduring popularity - Lee Minho has released one kdrama in the last 5 years.

I had this discussion with Juanlag before (big IU fan from before the revamp) a few years back about how IU is just an incredibly well managed artist.

Took over Korea with her vocals/signwriting/music. Collabed with Seulong a few months after 2AM's biggest hit. Took over pan-asia through k-dramas (Scarlet Heart being an original popular Cdrama). Collabed with the biggest 2nd gen male star in G-Dragon (also the biggest kpop artists in China at the time) further helping her get her name out all over Asia and especially China. More kdramas. Targeted season specific songs which is a popular thing in SK. With kpop being the biggest it has ever been in the world collabed with a BTS member that has made her popular/got her known very well even outside of Asia. Before Eight I don't think I'd ever seen a IU video trend on Youtube in the UK, since then pretty much all her MV's have. Her music also evolves with popular sounds as she consistently jumps on trends when needed.

When you think about how her and her team go about business it's not surprising her longevity is crazy and still growing more than 10 years later. She utilises her skillset to the fullest and makes smart promo decisions. Popular kdramas will make her music more popular and vice versa.

Her popularity is a sum of many parts that a normal idol group does not get to do.

  • Enduring popularity is not limited to K-drama, Psy's hits are years in the past, Gangnam Style itself, 9 years old. Yet he still ranks.

So yes it is a mix of things, but the narrative that her fame is entirely due to K-dramas is incorrect. There is no way to isolate what % of the fame comes from songs and what from acting.

I'm not saying it's limited to kdramas - but I'm saying she's an anomaly in that list being so high up for singers as there's barely any other evidence outside of this survey to show IU as the 3rd most popular kpop artist globally. She doesn't have an enduring song like Psy.

  • "As a result of the survey, the first thing that comes to mind when it comes to Korea is K-pop ( 14.0 %). It has been number one for five consecutive years since 2017 . It was around the time when BTS began to gain explosive popularity on the overseas stage."

Before BTS, Korea was mostly known food, beauty or technology. I mean atleast that's what I knew Korea for. I am highly projecting here but Idk why I think it might be the case for majority. But now it is mainly known worldwide because of kpop. Because of BTS. It is rare for any country to have a person or a group of people to be the face of the country. BTS are just that for Korea.

This survey indicates that China is the country which most favours her and as far as I know, she does consistently top Chinese rankings of foreign celebrities.

    For example:

IU, BLACKPINK, EXO, & More, Weibo Reveals The Most Popular K-Pop Idols & Artists In China!

So perhaps instead of saying 'there's barely any other evidence", you should say "you aren't aware of any other evidence", and do some web search.

How does you showing me China popularity, which I'm well aware of and explained in my other comment, corroborate the idea that she's the 3rd most popular musical Korean artist overall in all the countries surveyed i.e. the actual point that was being made?

In the table in the OP she's a more popular musical act than Twice in nearly every country surveyed. There'd be a lot more contradictory evidence to that than corroborative. There's a few on there that I get, but a bunch of others I don't. Is this just a questionnaire?

What do you want me to say? If the survey says so and you don't agree, then that is your problem.

I think the survey is as reliable as it gets. I have not checked vis-a-vis Twice or others. But simply that by this Survey or others like the weibo one, IU is extremely popular in China and that in turn makes her popular internationally since China is a huge market.

You keep talking about China when that's not the point being made, China doesn't even have the most respondents, Japan does - if you genuinely believe IU on average is the 3rd most popular musical kpop artist when combining all the countries in the survey, fair enough. I don't. That was my point. I don't need you to say anything, you replied to me.

I went by WhyKnock statement in the thread, that China is the reason she has topped others. I have not checked the number of respondents, what questions were asked etc.

As to my belief - genuine or not, has no relevance in such things. Anecdotal beliefs/disbeliefs are utterly unreliable - mine or others, that is the whole reason statistical survey like this are being done.

If you have expertise in that, you can question the survey mechanism, sampling etc.

I am fine to go along with the Ministry's survey.
