Melon is more important for every group.
whichever makes more money.
melon for me
Melon for sure. Spotify’s pay is laughable and doesn’t translate to success much. So many other artists have high Spotify streams too. Charting high on Melon means recognition in Korea that can lead to making money via CFs, growing your fandom, etc. Having a loyal fandom in Korea is the dream of all idol groups
Melon, no doubt. Aside of one recognized global hit like Gangnam Style, hard to get.
both
Is it serious? Obviously melon
Melon success leads to cf, variety show, recognition in korea
Spotify numbers leads to nothing look at everglow they have great numbers and they are nowhere near the top gg
And even among idols melon matter more
Look at how idols thanks their fans whenthey top melon or are entering melon top 10
I never see any idol thanks their fans or leave a message to congratulate them for making it into spotify global 200 etc....
Who's the 10 ppl so delusional to think that spotify matter more than melon?
the difference is that if a group does good on melon, they'll be top artists on melon. on spotify only bts (#41) and bp (#292) rank anywhere.
if you're going to place more importance on spotify then the group better rank. if they dont rank it's worth next to nothing.
so i'd say melon is more important.
It’s 100% Melon. Doing well on the Korean charts will ALWAYS lead the group to more opportunities from
CF’s, brand endorsements, variety show invitations etc.
Brave Girls is the PERFECT example of what topping Melon can do for your career. It basically catapulted them from disbanding to becoming one of the hot and trending GG‘s of 2021. Ask any kpop artist and I guarantee you they would rather top Melon than Spotify. The fact that idols post about their melon chart position when they do well vs Spotify (literally never seen an idol post about Spotify charts) should already be enough of an answer.
I would say to release some music consistent in both quality and quantity
because they already earn loads of money some extra digitals wont make much of a difference
Melon is more important for every group/ idol/ artist :P
International - Spotify.
National - Melon but I think Spotify will become more important there.
They are both online music services, why would any music company prefer one over the other?
Unless either of the services demand exclusivity - that if hosted on Melon then Spotify won't host or vice versa.
In that hypothetical situation and if all things being equal e.g. revenue share and other contract terms, then I think Melon ought to be more important.
S.Korea is still the largest market for Kpop, never mind all the noise around BTS success.
Last I read, Melon still has the largest market share of music services in SK.
So why would any company (all other things being equal), pick Spotify over Melon?
But there could other factors, for example if the song is an English song meant primarily to Western audience and a Grammy obsession, then Spotify might be better, but again Spotify or Melon have separate deals based on Geographics.
So a company could very well do Melon for SK and Spotify for US etc.
Still as a trend, Melon still matters more than Spotify for Kpop companies releasing Korean songs for primarily Korean market.
