Will Taeyeon and BoA be the only real successful SM female soloists in their entire history?

  • hmm she did... :pepepizza:

She did well tbh, her first peaked at 2 but she does better now. She done well, but she's also improved in consistency and has gained a bigger fanbase, it all takes time.

    :sweatr1:

Not many people start at the top like teayeon, example IU. It took her awhile to Get as big as she is now, it's not impossible for any idol, so long as they're consistent and make good music.

  • it’s a little too early to speak for both rv and aespa.

wendy does have the perfect public friendly voice but she still isn’t that popular with the gp. as the other replies say, seulgi and joys solos could have the potential to be huge. aespa are kids, give them time to grow lol

what are you talking about? "I" was number 1 on the charts and one of Taeyeon's best digitally performing songs. If anything, her consistency has been a lot more erratic in the last 2 years (hasn't really had a hit since "four seasons" and even before that there were up and downs like "fine" vs "something new"). Her album sales have also stayed relatively stable over the last 5 years - she sold over 100k for her first mini-album and sold a similar number for her most recent mini album (her full albums sell better by about ~50k).

It took IU 2 years to get big (she debuted Sept 2008 with abysmal digital/physical sales, "Good Day" came out Dec 2010 and that mini sold over 90k) but you can't compare at all because IU didn't start in a group - when she debuted as a solo, she started at 0, with zero recognition, fans, hype, or reputation.

The main problem with Wendy is lack of promotion and hype. Has she been on a single radio or promotional show at all? Did SM just release her album and then peace out?

Ah yea they must be talking about the Gaon Album Chart which is physical sales.

Of course it's always possible for soloists to rise with further comebacks and songs but the initial debut hype is pretty important to set the standard for the solo debut and part of that is on SM for not doing more.

  • The main problem with Wendy is lack of promotion and hype. Has she been on a single radio or promotional show at all? Did SM just release her album and then peace out?

With that another thing is popularity. She doesn't have the popularity that makes people anticipate her.

  • Even with 24 years of history, Taeyeon and BoA are the only female soloists from SM that stand out among her company peers. This is not counting those who go into acting.

I don't see anyone in RV or Aespa get to the level Taeyeon has as a solo singer with both fanbase + public support combined.

I don't think it's fair to compare BoA and Taeyeon to any other female SM soloists.

BoA debuted as a soloist and at a very young age. SM had only her to push as a soloist and she had so much time for growth and success. BoA owned Japan at some point and opened the door for the success of the Kpop industry in Japan we see today. That's a lot to be compared to.

Taeyeon had a whole Snsd. The biggest Kpop girl group for many years not just as a group but as soloists in different ways. They were way more successful than any other SM girl group has ever been.

So you can't compare Luna and Wendy to them because they were never pushed as soloists from day one and never had groups as huge as Snsd.

Also Luna was promoted in a very experimental girl group Fx with members having all kinds of issues that could only draw in a small fraction of fans. Sulli was always hated on and she lost the interest in being an idol until she left, Victoria found success in China so she chose to leave, Krystal had issues with SM because of Jessica, Amber wasn't popular enough to help carry Fx forward. All those hurdles affected each member's solo career. Luna was also never pushed as hard as Taeyeon before her solo debut.

Wendy is promoting in an inconsistent group concept wise where their comebacks are either a hit or miss for the GP.

BoA and Taeyeon didn't have such problems from debut and it's too early to judge because Wendy just started.

  • I love how op is throwing all this shade at Wendy but then this happened today. This is with only 5 days of tracking and SM under stocking albums as usual and yet her album is STILL sold out on many retailers website.

Selling 100K+ albums is NO easy feat for a female soloist. Literally only a handful of female idols have managed to do that and she has the 2nd highest album sales after Rose for a 3rd Gen female soloist, so at least Wendy has a really supportive fanbase. Digital charting is nice and all but album sales is where the money is at so I wouldn’t call her a complete flop just yet.

She also just signed a new CF deal with Skincare brand Ponds today. Wendy stays booked and busy

I think there could be an argument made for Spark being a hit and All About You was most definitely a hit, but yeah overall she's never been super consistent like IU, but she always garners the public's attention regardless if the song sticks or not
