SM entered the western music market very late compared to HYBE and the other big 3 labels.

Aespa was signed to Warner in 2022. Which is later than HYBE groups yes, but also the same year SKZ was signed to a US label and got distribution for the first time as well, so not unheard of. Now I think Aespa is with Virgin. Either way they've an American label, and have had one for a while. And so does NCT 127, since 2019.

I think 127 was signed to an american label when they were promoting heavily in the states in 2018-19ish. I think that's how they got some western features and got to the emas etc. not sure if it's the case nowadays, after covid sm just kinda stopped pushing them in the west bc they were kinda flopping there and their korean fandom was boycotting their activities bc of the sudden western focus

BTS and Blackpink were showing tremenduous signs of success in the West in 2017, even 2016 for BTS. They have a Western appeal that SM groups don’t have.

It’ s also true that SM did not push their groups in the West or when they did, it was very fickle and awkward. This company is good at making groups who appeals to Kpop fans and the Asian markets, nothing wrong with that.

SM never stroke while the iron was hot, meaning they would let the interest for its idols in the West wane and stubbornly focused on Asia.

Before Kpop was widely accepted in the West, kpop idols who broke through in the slightest, had their careers halted in Asia to go and carve something in the West (CL is an example of this, when 2ne1 actually gained some traction in the US she was shipped there for a solo debut that never happened officially wasting a few good years of 2ne1 Asian promotion in the process, and it was YG whose music was more liked in the West than the other companies).

And finally, every time SM did something to cater to the West it was an attempt to fit that came across as try-hard and poorly executed. Also kpop was still trying to find its style and sound in the times SM was reigning as the top company in kpop, meaning fewer people was willing to give it a try.

This is such a lame excuse when you realize THAT one sm group debuted on BB chart solely due to mediaplay and payola tactics. Yeah I'm taking about SuperM, a group they formed just to conquer western market.
