Why do charts matter so much to k-pop fans when talking about success?

  • A very small group is obsessed with streaming charts I think. Only people who stan groups who have never had anything substantial like touring and longevity.

Streaming has been relevant maybe the last 10 years or so in the entire history of the world.

For everyone else, streaming is useless, doesn’t pay shit and easily manipulated : it’s just a fun metric to post about as secondary to other more important metrics.

  • These success debates are tiresome and stupid, but charts do somewhat indicate what the public is listening to in a given area even if they can be and are sometimes manipulated. I wouldn't act like charts are totally meaningless yet, perhaps that's just me being naively optimistic

  • I think most Kpop fans that start listening to Kpop don't care much.

They love this new hobby and then "hey, this cool group is doing quite well."

Then they encounter some dumb antis that try to drag this new group you like using stats, and so it begins....

I agree. I think most people just want enough success to keep their faves active and do well., and the stats talk is often in retaliation.

  • charting is important because it helps groups make a name of themselves especially more so if they less popular to increase their brand awareness to get better cfs and deals and such

it matters to fans because certain less popular groups literally depend on sales and charts to survive. If they fail then their chances of premature disbandment increase

certain fans like to gloat about their groups and use charts to start fanwars and the like.

success is important in many competitive things such as sports and kpop is just representative of that where fandoms become very tribal in a us vs them attitude

  • Because they don’t even like the music or even their faves that much. They only care about the numbers.

A lot of these people don’t even like K-pop anymore.

    It's absolutely THIS

Charts and number wanking is done by sad weird little worms that NEED to turn a hobby based around cute girls and handsome boys singing and dancing into a numbers game, likely to fill a very empty deficit in their own life.

The numbers and charts obsessed wankers are the saddest, most pathetic little subset of kpop fandom who simply cannot enjoy kpop for what it is and must make it a competitive sport.

Sad, pathetic losers one and all and kpop fandom would be better off overall if every chart and number wanker just walked into an active volcano tomorrow and left kpop alone for the people who want to discuss the genuinely FUN part of the hobby, not NUMBER GOES UP

The most hilarious example of this was when one of these very sad weirdos said that men are only into kpop to analyse charts and numbers. Like... how very sad and weird must you be?

  • Theres a massive, massive difference in being happy that a group you like doing well in some way and just being proud of them as a singular and...

Spending day after day after day constantly discussing the same charts and numbers as competitive instruments or weapons to engage in non stop arguments and wankishness to fight with others over. To make every single small victory or statistic an "us vs them" thing and have 300 post threads slopping yourself over who had the biggest graph or most zeros. That's when it becomes sad and pathetic and reduces kpop to some kind of competitive sport.

You can be very happy about the achievements of Saja Boys and how well they are doing WITHOUT using that to abuse, belittle or attack Huntr/X and their fans. It's only something sad and lacking in your own life that drives you to WANT to do that, and do that constantly.

You can very easily discuss how legendary Saja Boys was, and their impacts, without needing to make it a ranking, dick waving argument between them, Huntr/X and the The Sunlight Sisters over who was "more legendary" because one had a bigger number than the rest. That, to me, only seems to trying mask your own inadequacies, you never achieved much, but a group you like did, so... now you did?

Some people are misunderstanding the thread. It's not that charting doesn't matter - it does matter for the sake of business reasons, some part of marketing, and it does create nice fandom culture to collect achievements.

It's simply that way too many fans act as if they're the idols themselves, or their managers or companies. We do not need to sweat so much over these numbers! KPop is so much more than charting and numbers... and people just argue and argue about this stuff.

  • I don't disagree with anything you've said my friend

I will add though that such (let's call them) success fans only do it to provoke a reaction or to start fanwars...the simplest (although I won't say easy) thing to do would be to just ignore them and focus on one's favs...

I'm also not claiming that those that do engage such success fans are as "bad" as them just an eye for an eye just leaves everybody blind

  • We really have folks pocket watching idols, talking about who's the highest paid and wealthiest member of a group. They go as far as to gather data of earnings from brand deals, solo sales, solo touring revenue, and family member affiliation.

I don't care if it came as a result of trying to prove haters wrong. At some point, people have to hold themselves accountable to end the cycle.

Also, I'm afraid AKP itself is the active volcano where those folks walk into. You don't see nearly the same degree of charts obsession on other platforms aside from maybe X. It's the reason why this forum got to where it is today, but it's also the reason for its downfall.
