Who is more popular in Japan?

I was in Japan last month, and heard and saw NJs quite often. Not saying they're more popular than Sakura, but to my eye it seems they are well liked.

When you say popular, are we talking about the individual members or the group’s songs? I think Sakura is more well-known individually, so she’s more popular in that sense. As for NewJeans, none of the members are Japanese, yet their songs are among the most popular in Japan. Groups like TWICE, LSF, and ILLIT all have Japanese members, which plays a big role in their popularity there. Still, I’d say Sakura takes the win for me.Because the word 'popularity' makes me think more of personal recognition

I think you can consider songs for NewJeans because their songs are the reason they are popular. Meanwhile, Sakura has had extensive exposure to the japanese entertainment and music industry/market through many endeavors (her time is AKB, etc)

Like I said, 'popularity' makes me think more about how well-known someone is personally. Even if the songs blow up, it feels more meaningful when people actually know the members too.

Some of you seem to often forget that KPop is not the main genre of music listened to in Japan and that even tho someone in a KPop group is Japanese dosn't mean they are the most famous person in Japan, no mather how famous their group is

Sakura has been a super popular idol in Japan for 15 years, to compare them with NJ is completely ridiculous, obviously she's more popular than them and more popular than any group that is not completely entablished, the only doubt would be with Twice and BTS.

If anything, this situation just makes more impressive that despite Sakura's popularity, NJ is still more popular than LSFM.

Thanks. Of this much I am aware already. I guess this is what she “did” in Japan, I’m curious as to what she “does” now. Asking honestly because I just don’t know Japan like I know Korea. I see NewJeans doing loads of specials on NHK and releasing songs in Japan that go on to become massive hits (like Supernatural), and Twice have their own sub-unit for Japan and are big brand ambassadors - I’m just curious as to what Sakura does now to remain so popular there (if that is the case).

Can we expand the scope of answers? Please add Twice and ILLIT.

NJ isn’t more popular than LSRF they have more hits and bigger but LSRF remains the biggest 4th gen GG

And who said anything about her being "the most famous woman in Japan?" Who said she was currently in a Japanese group for that matter? And who, if anyone, said most Japanese people listen to Kpop? What is your point? Do you have any, besides hyperbole?

I would say that Sakura is definitely more recognized by the public, despite NewJeans being the trending kpop group at the moment.
