SM Entertainment are the absolute best at debuting distinct, diverse girl groups

  • Is SM the best at making girl groups? 24

    1. Yes (21) 88%
    2. No (3) 13%

I mean look at this lineage

    S.E.S.

    SNSD

    f(x)

    Red Velvet

    aespa

There isn't significant concept or sound overlap across any of these groups.

If I really wanted to be cheeky, I could add NewJeans.

You may respond with "NewJeans? What are you smoking, Yama? That's a HYBE group"

Well they used to be. Now they're independent. But even before they terminated their contract with ADOR, they were really a HYBE group in name only.

Min Heejin formed NewJeans with the experience and skills she gained after nearly two decades as a creative director in SM, and she was directly involved in the concepts, visuals and overall design of all those SM girl groups, with the possible exception of S.E.S. (but even they are close friends with her).

    So, do you agree?

Is SM the GOAT at making girl groups?

  • Yep, all their ggs have quality releases, I specially love SNSD and RV music and while I never listened much f(x), the songs I listened from them are iconics! Aespa is one of my top3 4th gen group, I love their sound too and yes, they are all different and this is something difficult to do in kpop. They all have their own identity.

  • all groups in SM after 'first run' of 7 year contract end as being just used as 'we didn't disbanded but members are leaving agency one after another', then they transition to acting or some bullshit non important modeling/tv activities and here we are

    also it was

    3+9+5+5+4

so they've debuted just 26 members in total in 27 years... :S

this shows the ratio isn't so good and they barely gave anyone a chance to debut

SM and YG probably have the highest ratio of trainees which they burned out, or didn't let them debut under agency and let make them leave

  • You're right.

People wouldn't mix them up, they each have good branding and sound. Like another user said, they have an identity that differentiates them from each other.

  • I think they do better than JYP/YG at making their groups feel more distinct while still maintaining the identity of an of "SM girl group", but not in a derivative way. And of course the groups have been very successful, so yea I guess so.

  • Sure but they really suck at managing them in the long run so no.

There is no way to make an argument that SM is worse at managing their girl groups than HYBE and YG.

JYP has made several missteps pretty much the entirety of 4th generation.

The bar is low, but SM have absolutely been the best.

HYBE is by far the worst.

  • I know you're on a warpath against Hybe but let's not get crazy

There is no argument for HYBE being better at managing girl groups than SM. Is that what you're trying to say?

Because the HYBE Girl Group Curse is one of the most recognized entities in K-Pop lore, and it began all the way back with GLAM and has affected literally all of their girl groups.

As an amendment, in case you were more reacting to my comment that SM is the best, look at the competition:

    YG

    JYP

Also, SM can mediocre at management and still be better than the rest at doing it :boompepe:

They're both bottom of the barrel in terms of artist welfare and treatment. Most of the shit Hybe is doing down are poorly executed steps from the SM handbook

The GLAM/GFRIEND/fromis_9 combo alone already puts HYBE in a tier of their own

But then I think of how incompently they managed LSF/ILLIT/NJ, and they move into an entirely separate plane of existence

SM is far from perfect, but no company is, and HYBE are notoriously awful with girl groups specifically. I actually think it's insulting to SM to put them in the same sentence.

Don't even get me started on YG.

  • Controversial opinion: YG is actually the best amongst the big 4.

You have no idea how much it hurts me to say this as a blink :emotionalpepe:

As a Blackjack, that statement reads like it came straight from a fever dream.

I'll never forgive YG for how he threw Park Bom under the bus when she was getting eaten alive by the media for having a prescription drug she acquired legally in the U.S.

Then, after 2NE1 released their best and still last album, they're disbanded and YG promised a goodbye song...that NEVER HAPPENED

Ten years later, he's still dead to me. Also, I'm disqualifying YG because they are in a dead heat with HYBE for being the absolute worst at debuting girl groups with distinct colors, sound and minimal concept overlap.

  • I think artistically, SM is the best although they do a little too much for me (NCT and Aespa)

But I can't see them as anything but the worst for their history of how they've treated and failed their artists, attacked former artists, the numerous lawsuits and what's been said about them by said artists.

    For me:

SM and Hybe at the very bottom

JYP slightly higher in the dumpster fire tier

And YG in the "at least it's not our own artists suing us" tier

  • The context of this thread was limited just to the artistic qualities of the girl groups, and I obviously think SM easily clears their competition.

If it's management, specifically just girl groups, HYBE have to be in a tier of their own. I don't see how they couldn't be, with their tragic and storied history with girl groups.

I remember it used to be popular theory that HYBE would never try debuting a girl group ever again because of their previous attempts.

Management came up and I physically can't let SM management praise go unchecked. It's a medical condition. Please be understanding :peperain:

  • And i do agree that SM is very strong at giving their GG a strong identity who stick to them till the end

I mean look at SES discography and what they did with their 20th year anniversary comeback

So many times passed, and music changed a lot during these times bit they were still 20 years after able to give to SES a song that feel like the old SES.

The same can be said with Snsd

Forever 1 sound like something that Snsd could have release during their time they were active

    But it didn't sound outdated

It sounded modern like the songs released around the same time but at the same time it had this SNSD sound that felt nostalgic and remember 2nd gen

And i think people can like or dislike the type of concept that red velvet or aespa have made

But for the moment SM is the only company in kpop taking a risk at trying to explore many different things to be sure that their GG can't be compare to each other
