BABYMONSTER vs. MEOVV

  • Most of us (me included) thought that MEOVV would skyrocket to the top. I remember the discussions on here and other platforms/forums that MEOVV would have an explosive debut even more than NJ since they are supposedly the real sister group of BLACKPINK. Most were saying better watch out for Teddy's group, 5th gen leaders!

I've noticed they do not have many fans watching their youtube videos and their engagement is low. Are they boring to watch like NJ?

    The difference is pretty jarring:

    Youtube Views: BABYMONSTER >>> MEOVV

    Subscribers: BABYMONSTER >>> MEOVV

    Overall Engagement: BABYMONSTER >>> MEOVV

    Streams: BABYMONSTER >>> MEOVV

Be honest, did you expect this to happen?

  • It's not that much of a surprise.

BABYMONSTER had way more official content before they debuted thanks to The Last Evaluation. People knew about the name "BABYMONSTER" or "BAEMON" years before we even knew who the members would be.

There was already a lot of anticipation for them because they're a YGE girl group, the first YG GG to debut after BLACKPINK at that.

Meanwhile not much came out about MEOVV. We only knew Teddy was working on a girl group, but not much was revealed.

  • The hype for MEOVV was there in the beginning, maybe even more than BAEMON. That's why people were already making assumptions that they were going to rule 5th gen.

Remember these photos? A lot of people were excited. Do you think it's because of the lack of a SEA member in MEOVV? BAEMON has two SEA members. Or is it the members themselves?

  • I can understand why these two groups are being compared; after all, they’re both connected to the same company. However, to me, they’re so different that I just don’t feel like comparing them. On another note, I think the biggest reason Meovv fell short of expectations is that too many people were involved in their songs. There are five or six names listed under songwriting, and the same goes for production. I believe Teddy should have been more careful and selective when it came to choosing songs. That said, I still think Meovv holds a lot of potential for the future. Since both groups have been overshadowed within their respective generations, comparing them feels unnecessary to me. these two groups should be compared with other groups from their own generation because it’s clear that Babymonster and Meovv have completely different themes, styles, and priorities.

  • YG groups are always going to draw a huge Asian fanbase, so YouTube and Spotify was always theirs.

Meovv's debut song did pretty well, especially compared to Batter Up. TheBlackLabel did not make smart moves after it. There's still time for them to make it, it's only been a few months

  • I remember those pictures. People were definitely excited based on vibes. However, it was just that.

There was no official rollout for the debut aside from the member teasers.

But to be honest, I just don't see any 5th gen groups reaching BLACKPINK or NewJeans level if those are the numbers you're thinking of.

Both BABYMONSTER and MEOVV are going to succeed, but in the context of a niche. I think that's good enough for me.

I think people are expecting way too much of both groups, but that's just unfair and unrealistic. I feel like it takes the fun and enjoyment out of K-pop.

the songs shouldn't be a problem for meovv tho, they just need better promotion.

I don’t know, maybe I have an old-fashioned mindset, but for me, a group’s road to success is more about their songs and song choices than promotions. Sure, good promotions could have made them more visible, but I still can’t wrap my head around someone like Teddy choosing Meow as the meovv's debut song.

  • YG is still apart of the big 3, it's no shock to me that babymonster is more popular. The thing with meovv is that their debut felt very dull, not to say that it was bad, we've just heard and seen so many other groups like them before. Nothing about them is unique or shocking. Take aespa for example, their debut concept photos were amazing and felt very fresh because of their otherworldly and ethereal concept. But meovv's concept is just basic, not bad but it doesn't make them stand out, their individual debut teasers had a bit of substance, but all of that was somehow lost in the music video and song.

I never understood people saying meovv were the next blackpink, because teddy has been washed up for a while now. He has no original concepts or sounds anymore. babymonster were always going to come out on top.

  • Stop expecting groups to debut like NewJeans. We'll probably never see anything quite like their debut again. Every girl group that follows will feel like a flop if you make debut era NewJeans the bar

the reference point is YG's girl groups 2NE1 and BLACKPINK.

edit : the original poster set NJ as the standard, but I think the real reason for the disappointment among most people is the comparison of these two groups to 2NE1 and BLACKPINK.

Why is Nj catching strays here? Their Yt engagement is solid, and their personal content always trends in Korea. Their mv are just long, have multiple versions, and don’t use ads like other groups.

In fact, I'm glad that Teddy didn't take part in their songs because we all know that his sound is outdated. Just look at izna and their performance on charts :meme-what:

Teddy is no longer the same producer we once knew. It's actually BLACKPINK that has kept Teddy relevant.

and for OP, having a south east asian member doesn't guarantee you anything. :meme-excuse-me:

You seem like a babymonster fan. Aren’t the songs by babymonster also have more than five/six writers?

  • Why is Nj catching strays here? Their Yt engagement is solid, and their personal content always trends in Korea. Their mv are just long, have multiple versions, and don’t use ads like other groups.

Why not? For their so-called high popularity and success, their youtube views for their contents are bad

  • and teddy should use his connection to make the girls appear in any shows out there.

The Black Label has been doing decent promotion for MEOVV this recent comeback, but I feel like a lot of people don't even realize.

MEOVV has been appearing in a number of shows lately:

    Silence of Idol

    School Attack

At least 3 radio show appearances

A number of performances on Inkigayo

    2024 MAMA performance:

MEOVV also had their performance at 2024 MAMA Chapter 2 in Osaka, which was a huge deal. 2024 was split into different days, and that was the biggest day in terms of award prestige and performances. G-Dragon, BIGBANG, (G)I-DLE, aespa, and Seventeen were among the performers.

    Performance videos:

    "TOXIC" performance on NPOP

"BODY" performance video on STUDIO CHOOM

"BODY" relay dance on Mnet M2

    Official performance video of "BODY"

meijwy can vouch for me on this! I might be missing something, but she would probably know more.

  • You don’t think babymonster would still have a big fan base without the survival show?

I know you're asking Slayurfaves but here's what I think. I think the survival show gave fans the opportunity to get to know the members. It was a great way to promote the group before they debuted.

BABYMONSTER was also hailed as the successor of BLACKPINK even before people knew Teddy and The Black Label would have their own girl group.

Ahyeon alone was a big name. Remember when she had to have a break before debuting with BABYMONSTER? People were speculating all sorts of things and freaking out.

During predebut, when one of MEOVV's supposed members allegedly left, people didn't really care that much. MEOVV didn't have a "star trainee" to anticipate aside from Ella, but Ella simply didn't have the same hype as Ahyeon did.

For BABYMONSTER, I think the comparison of Chiquita and Lisa and the comparison of Ahyeon and Jennie really helped. People were already loving the dynamic of the group members during predebut. People got to see predebut footage of the BABYMONSTER members when they were trainees. We didn't get that with MEOVV.

  • Why not? For their so-called high popularity and success, their youtube views for their contents are bad

Show me the data proving they're doing that poorly and the views for their contents are bad. Like give me the numbers. And you're acting like Nj isn’t still such a young group, with their main company trying to bury them even before they celebrate their 2nd debut anniversary. That’s the only thing holding them back this year. Yet, here’s my data showing how they’re performing in line with their popularity on Youtube even as a very young group. So, Lil 7, show me your proof that they’re doing badly compared to their peers.

  • The flop of Babymonster and Meovv just confirmed one thing to me :

Girl crush like it used to be in 3rd gen will not work anymore

They both went for the simple girl crush aesthetic that BP used to have but it doesn't work anymore people grew tired of the girl crush concept they need something more to spark the interest of people and make people wants to comeback

Both aespa and Gidle have understood this

They can both be label as a girl crush gg but both group doesn't seem to fit in the same category of girl crush than bp, meovv and Bm

The problem with teddy and YG is that they had a recipe who worked well in 2nd gen and 3rd gen and they thought that it will work forever

So that's what they did with meovv and BM but it's clear that it doesn't work

And people need a bit more

Also imo both group are too inconsistent with their release

I loooooved Meovv debut but their two last track have been underwhelming, toxic should not be the tt and body lack of a very good energetic and addictive hook

  • I'm talking about CONTENT VIEWS on their channel and I'm not talking about Korea only or how much money they generated on YT or Youtube MUSIC

    BabyMonster: 2.37B

    NewJeans: 1.99B

BabyMonster is a younger group than NewJeans and they got better views. Just saying overall with their popularity, not many people are tuning in to watch their contents because they are boring variety wise. I'm no lil 7 lol bfr!

  • I loooooved Meovv debut but their two last track have been underwhelming, toxic should not be the tt and body lack of a very good energetic and addictive hook

Don't worry. This is like when aespa debuted with the bop and banger that was "@@@836c1172-015b-4367-825a-4adeda47baae@@@" and their first comeback was "Forever," a remade ballad. We already know what happened in the comeback after that; history happened with "Next Level."

I have a good feeling history will repeat with MEOVV. :yesr:

Don't worry, SooYoung ! We got this!

  • TBL should promote their talents more like YG did with babymonster. Upload some covers with live singing, no backtrack, etc

  • I believe you're not that bright, to be honest. Sorry to be harsh, but seriously, didn't you check first at least? You’re talking about content views, but I bet you didn’t realize BM released their MV on their OWN YouTube channel, not on YG’s. So, how those mv views get separated here? And not to mention, the views include ads, which we all know Baemon uses even for their content. If not you actually only just proving my point that Nj really doing well there.

Also, the Forbes literally list powerful YouTube channels among celebrities in Korea, like how you think they earn those money if not from their views? Like think a bit? Hybe groups like Nj only use their channel to release personal content, not Mvs. Yet, they’re still up there with groups that release Mvs on their channels. And you want to tell me they have low views on their content? How it works? And you have that number 7 on you name, it's not an insult to call you that. Never said you're part of any fandom.

  • You pretty much covered everything. I have been updating your thread for other things etc:

jojo7 is very bright! They just missed something or didn't consider something. Don't be mean!

  • i want them to also appear on knowing bros, running man or any famous shows out there, i don't want to talk about mama.. because that mainly focus to please international fans.
