How did EXO lost so much popularity internationally?

Mismanagment from their company and hiatuses. Had they been releasing at least 1-2 albums every year and promoting it, they would've still attracted the public's eyes and not just their fans. Cream Soda did good, but not Love Shot-good.

+ The members also focus on individual activities, solo albums, acting, commercials, etc...

Didn’t SM also decide to promote SuperM rather than exo just when kpop made a large international breakthrough ?

I always wondered why.

I don't think lack of international appeal is the reason, EXO was really popular beyond the countries they were targeted to. Mistreatment from their company and the enlistment may have helped, it is difficult to keep people interested if they can't see you often and the ones who are new or come through other groups but know nothing about you won't go looking for you if they don't know you exist. Also there is this deafening silence around EXO, fans are not as loud and the other fandoms and the industry won't talk about them as if they never existed. Only one appearance and people can see why they are who they are.

I think it’s more they weren’t able to catch up with kpop’s expansion rather than losing popularity. This is more due to they started going in military when kpop exploded globally, SM prioritising SuperM and NCT, etc. SM took the L with them as BTS blew the world.

Since I started stanning them I have yet to see them have a full group comeback poor me never knew what i was getting into

I think this is Kai’s choice nothing on SM. He released a solo when he was comfortable and confident. There was so much thought put into Kai’s first solo I don’t think he would have released it before. That’s alright. I’m ok with Kai’s timing. The only who waited too long was Baekhyun. Baekhyun should have had a solo in 2016. It would have killed. Chen’s solo debuted with a roof hit and 900k ULs on Melon. Baekhyun waited too long.

It’s ok. Everything for good. EXO’s solo are their own choice and their success is on them.

I just checked and found out that Peaches has less than half the streams of Rover and Mmmh I was legit shocked. It's his best song not even that bratz meme could make it go viral

Their lastest album's achivements were carried by the international support and It's their best selling album to date. Apart from outliers such as 'Love Shot' and 'Monster', their international streams have not been far from what It was during their peak.

Rather than losing popularity, I'd say they didn't grow alongside K-pop's global expansion and, even though their name is well known, they aren't a "stanable" group for newer K-pop fans due to lack of activities and enlistment.
