Groups that were never really good to make it - #1 Weki Meki

  • Now that they are nearing the end of their contract and have been on a hiatus for 2 years I feel like we can kinda openly talk about why this group just didn't work. Of course people can endlessly blame company and other outside factor but when you look at the facts on hand you have group with one of the best discographies and I am a firm believer that good songs need just a little push to become hits and WeMe just didn't have that little push in them.

Here are the 3 highlights of what exactly was wrong with WekiMeki.

    1) Visuals.

First of all, lets not beat around the bush, the group is severely lacking in visuals. Yes, I know most of you aren't comfortable talking about this specific aspect cause you think it makes you a horrible person compared to when you bash artists for charting, but it is one of the key elements of Kpop, deal with it. Debuting a group with such lacking visuals was a pretty bad idea. Especially during the 3rd gen, when we started getting groups with no visual holes like Twice and Red Velvet and a lot of fans, kfans more so, started getting very demanding about it, which started whole another drama with trolls purposely voting for non visual trainees during Produce48 to "ruin" the group.

    2) Talent.

Okay, but idols who lack visuals can always make up for it with the talent, right? Absolutely, and we've seen that happening many times. But the thing is Weki Meki members don't have the talent to make up for their lack of visuals. Of course they can hold a tune, but they don't have the skills and charisma of Mamamoo for example. So you have a group with sub part visuals + sub part talent.

    3) Doyeon.

I just said WekiMeki lacked visuals and you've probably prepared your Doyeon gifs and pics to prove me wrong but that is the thing, Doyeon makes things worse. She's just too perfect, she shines too bright. Without her they'd at least look average, but when with Doyeon around, the rest look like back up dancers. And they were perfectly aware of this it seems, because they'd always hide Doyeon in the group pics, like look at this pic it is so funny. Or look at their usual standing formation.

Conclusion, it is not that Fantagio doesn't know how to promote groups, it is more so that they don't know how to make them. It as obvious they'd flop after this comment section.

  • Well you're a lot braver than I am and took the words right out of my mouth.

Love my IOI girls to death, but they were dragged by their ankles by dead weights. You got Doyeon and Yoojung and the best you can do to form a group is the forehead girl from PD101??

Just disband them and let the girls free😡😡

Even for IOI, one of the members was voted on despite not having good visuals or skills.

For IzONE the unskilled member that made the team had good visuals.

Regarding Wiki Meki, is hard for medium to bottom companies to get many visuals. Many have 1 good visual and maybe 2 or 3 ok visuals, the rest 'grow' on fans.

  • Let's not act like if they had all these check marks they be popular cause it's all luck. Especially since most of the big groups at least girl group level aren't vocally strong and visuals are up to whoever decides.

  • Waiting for the pristin one, watching their debut MV couldn't stop thinking how kpop groups should always be 5-6 members, more than that only if it's completely necessary.

Honestly all the post IOI groups were a flop. Gugudan, Pristin, Weki Meki, and DIA.

Though it could be argued that WJSN is not.

Honestly, I don't even keep up with any of the former IOI members outside of Kim Sejeong as she was the one I liked the most from IOI.

  • Doyeon needs to go the Cha Eunwoo and Kwon Nara route. How has Fantagio not booked her in more and bigger dramas yet. She doesn't even need to be the main lead, just more smaller supporting roles to build up her resume.

Seriously so sick of Fantagio burying Doyeon and Yoojung when they could be so much farther ahead in their careers than where they are currently.

True, only wjsn survived more than 3 years too. They all suffered from their companies oversaturation with trainees, and those dumb companies preferred to debut all those trainees than form a good complementary team around their popular produce girls like ive and lesserafim.

I just think the fans generally supported the former IOI members they liked. Not many IOI fans were interested in supporting the non-IOI members in these groups. A lot of the other members were just forgettable, and the groups felt like a rushed cash grab, plus the groups were massive. That being said IOI did have a shorter promotion window than IZ*ONE and Kpop had a lot fewer international fans at that point.

For example, Sejeong's personal YouTube account has three time the subscribers as the Gugudan official YouTube channel even if Gugudan is disbanded and hasn't uploaded in like 2 years I think my point still stands.

    Just a few details

    DIA existed before Produce 101.

WJSN debuted February 25, 2016. P101 final was April 1, 2016. So they debuted while the show was airing, I would imagine they were in the works by Starship way before the show happened, none of the original 12 members were sent to the show, starship sent their left over trainees, then they added the one P101 contestant that did well in the show.

Even most of the other teams were in the works before the show.

Gugudan went ahead and debuted the group on schedule (or hurried it up) while 2 of their members were still in IOI. So you know they had to be preparing for this for a while.

Pristin took the opposite approach and postponed their debut until after IOI was finished, but almost all the members participated in P101 and had to wait an extra year or so to debut. They were basically ready to go in 2016, but waited.

Realistically, Weki Meki was probably the only group that was put together after IOI disbanded.

  • True, only wjsn survived more than 3 years too. They all suffered from their companies oversaturation with trainees, and those dumb companies preferred to debut all those trainees than form a good complementary team around their popular produce girls like ive and lesserafim.

All things in life follow trends and Kpop companies are no different. Back during that time in 2015-2017, it was popular to go the SNSD route and debut large girl groups. The idea was that you have different types of members and there's something for everyone, so you easily become a fan of the group. So you can see why TWICE had 9, WJSN had 12 + Yeonjung, Gugudan had 9 and WeMe - 8 etc.

Obviously times had change and now companies see that it was easier for people to become fans of smaller groups since they get to know all of them. And smaller companies really can't afford to have large number of members as well.

  • Let's not act like if they had all these check marks they be popular cause it's all luck. Especially since most of the big groups at least girl group level aren't vocally strong and visuals are up to whoever decides.

Lets act exactly like that please. In fact lets act like only one of those check marks would help them. Because it would :pepe-just-smile:

I feel like they were better off debuting the original Fantagio girls line up from Produce in a 5 member group, whatever happened to the other two...

I just think the fans generally supported the former IOI members they liked. Not many IOI fans were interested in supporting the non-IOI members in these groups.

Fans would support the groups where the new members compliment their idols and reject the ones that they think aren't good enough for their idols. We've seen that play out pretty often.

What world do you live in where vocals are a top concern there not look at 3rd gen top two girl groups

  • The girl group, which debuted on August 8, 2017, will likely face their contract renewal season soon at Fantagio.

However, netizens noted that the girls of Weki Meki have not had a comeback since November of 2021, when they released their 5th mini album 'I AM ME', which featured the title track "Siesta".

Netizens wonder if Weki Meki will make a group comeback before their contracts expire this year
With the arrival Lunar New Year holiday weekend, K-Pop artists also delivered their New Year greetings and well wishes to their fans.&n…
