In the Age of Global Kpop is it Worth it to Promote in China?

  • As China seem to tighten its reigns around its conservative values, is it worth it for Kpop idols that are increasingly looking towards a global audience to actively promote in China? The most recent example of this is Lisa being wiped from Weibo and other Chinese social media sites. China is very sensitive about these sorts of things and with the power of the gov to censor and ban artists that make any mistake or say anything not in line with the CPC, should Kpop artists be wary of relying too much on Chinese fans and Chinese promotion?

  • there's lots of opportunity to hit it big in China but that comes with a price...

one has to stick with the status quo and go with the flow and not make waves...

there's tonnes of money to be made there if groups/individuals play their cards right

  • No, it's not. When you promote in China, you put yourself at the mercy of the CCP. You don't even have to say anything AGAINST the CCP for them to blacklist you. They practically banned BTS for making a speech about U.S and S.K relations and saying, “We will always remember the history of pain that our two nations shared together, and the sacrifices of countless men and women.” They didn't even MENTION China, just talked about how the U.S helped S.K during the Korean war at an event literally about U.S and S.K relations. But China was still offended.

They literally went and put a ban on feminine men on TV, just like that. It's not worth it to appeal to China and not just from a moral standpoint.

  • I think it’s worth it, it’s a big market. I just don’t think they should be dependent on China. Just like they should not be dependent on any market.

  • play their cards right

BTS got banned and got backlash and they didn't even say anything about China. Not to mention China banned Kpop just because of political shit. They also banned feminine men on Chinese TV bcs they felt like it. China doesn't want to allow cultural influences in their country becasue they want 100% control of what their people consume. There's no playing your cards right in that situation.

I'm not saying it's easy my friend...

in fact it's actually hard to toe the line but some groups make it work and some don't and some just don't care...

Came to say this too. Lots of opportunities but of course as in any case, one should understand your local client and regulations. Like some countries have its own limits. This doesn’t include the impromptu political climate and ramifications. It’s not limited to only China and SK but in the past between SK and Japan too. There are probably more localize cases and context but it’s not easy now a days when things can get taken out of context and misused for political agendas

it's a population of 1.4 billion people - there's plenty of opportunities to be had - you just have to play your cards right...

even if you have absolutely no talent or whatever but you're "pretty" you can still earn a shit tonne of money on the chinese variety show circuit...
