We need more older active female idols

  • and that's just for female soloists who cb and sing and promote - try finding an entire GG who's "older" and who promotes and cb and is somewhat successful

Maybe not an entire GG, but a majority of Red Velvet will be in their thirties starting next year and they're still active & successful.

I think SNSD's reunion was somewhat successful, as was Kara's. Several other 2nd gen groups have had comebacks in the past couple years but they were predictably paid dust.

Mamamoo are all nearly thirty, although they're definitely on the downslide.

If they don't disband in the coming months, Blackpink could potentially become the first third gen GG whose members are all 30+ and still "active" (at least by their standards), because that's only a few years away.

Twice could eventually make it there, but they've still got six years.

I think the remaining flagbearers of third gen will last longer on average than the previous generations, but actually making it into their thirties could be a tall order for the rest of them. There's no telling what the 4th gen groups will do, but perhaps Kpop will be less ageist by then.

  • I should say when I said older I guess 30+ as " older " lol

the only groups that have members that fight that criteria would be SNSD and kara???

SNSD was a success ( i remember that ) but how much did kara sell and how did they chart (k and I charting wise?)

for all other groups it depends on if

    1. they renew; and

    2. if they promote post renewal; and

    3. if they are successful

I remember posting this for something else but it applies equally here

I've said it before numerous times that for the most part Korean female idols have an "expiry period"

there are just not that many idols performing and releasing new music post (30???)

and of those not many that release music as a group and of those not many that actually succeed

thus being a female idol one needs to make the most of the limited time period in order to earn $$$

like I said if wonyoung (or any 13 and some 14 year old idols) debuted in a regular GG from the beginning they'd be younger than say Jisoo/Irene/Nayeon when they debuted - that's the equivalent of an entire 7 year contract periods worth of potential earnings.

I'm not saying whether it's right or wrong - it is what it is

to date there are only three GG in the entire history of kpop that have all the members who started renewed with the same company - dreamcatcher, mamamoo and twice

  • Since rollin reversal several older ggs reunited.

Kara have some support from Japan.

Snsd is snsd and also have SM and their crosspromo.

Apink ones in a while, and even t-ara came back.

So far the support for older groups is very limited. Dont even get me started with solos or real nugus.

BB Girls now will be the first GG that debute with all member in their 30s. Would be nice if they get this years rookie award but that is very unlikely.

we do have some groups and more will reach their 30s soon. Question is, if we are able to keep them.

  • Active as in a full unit/group? It'll be extremely hard once the members split off individually to pursuit things they would like to do. They spent years- mid teen to their late twenties being in groups, once that period is over most will likely want to find something new to pursue, or something more staple. Unless they're musically talented and can live off of those.

That's why most idols turn to acting or try to get the gig ASAP. SNSD members, Sejeong, Joy, Suzy, GFRIEND members; ones that I can think of right now. Older groups cannot fully compete with younger gens, not when the likes of companies producing new groups like the idol is going to expired. Which they will, age. You'll most likely to support your artists now, but 10 years down the line, where are you in life? Wife, husband, kids? Are you able to stream as well, buy as many albums, support them? How many of 'us' will still be into KPOP?

But if we're talking in terms of just entertainment or Youtube, then maybe. Maybe there will be chances where we can see older idols returning to it, if not in movies or dramas. Dancing Queens on the Road gave me hope- that maybe, just maybe some of my idols can still pursue their passion when they have reach the age of Hyori, UJH or Kim Wansun.

  • People say they want older women but then they pretty much ignore them after turning 30ish. You could go through a list of idols from 2G who have been active in some way and kpop fans will have no memory of 90% of them. The main ones who get support are SNSD but they mostly do acting and TV which has more interest from older audiences rather than music.

  • However i can see the difficulty of actually having full groups continuously promote bc kpop companies want to control their image and homelife as well and they wouldnt be able to do those things as easiky (nor swindle the idols out of money by “providing housing” aka 10 square feet per perso)

there are so many reasons idols get replaced regularly. usually u have to pay idols more if they reniew instead just hire new trainess. its easier to manipulate and influence unexperienced kids. etc. etc.

  • I thought that the collab groups with older gen idols (like the one that Hwasa was the maknae for) were like MEGA popular. I dont remember who, but i remember them blocking one of my favs on the charts at one point

there are allways trends. but they come and go. 8-9 years ago vocals were trending. live shows were super popular and idols could get massive raise in popularity with attending shows like masked singer. that changed a lot. lol

recently girl crush is trending and everyone did it. but groups like fifi, limelight, csr, wo!ah! should bring cute concept back.

unfortunatly sex sells and thats something we cant let them put into to the younger groups concepts. thats why we will allways need the older groups. otherwise kpop will have a hard time not seen as a bunch kids or pedos.^^

  • yeap which is why kpop groups and the idols themselves only have a short period of time to get their name out there so to speak because unless they do something other than idol music then they don't really have that much of a future

which is why they get into variety stuff or acting or modelling since singing as a soloist can be very hard and not many succeed

and those individuals you've mentioned are rare - of the thousands of kpop (obviously we're just discussing GG here) how many members of those groups succeed and continue even as individuals within the entertainment industry obviously if you were attached to a group like SNSD or Kara or whatever sure but most of the GG members eventually fade away and go do something else entirely which isn't a bad thing if they wanted to like you said start a family or just quit the industry but how many of them have tried to continue as an individual but just didn't have the support (finances?) to keep going???

  • You have Twice Cathetered, high Blood Pressure Pink, Mama OOOO MY Hip, and Red Vintage.

    What more do you need

There is now shortage of older Idols. But they cant compete with the younger groups. Most only reunite for a certain activity, arent active all the time or dont give the fanservice that an all active group delivers. Often their contract runs out soon or their future is uncertain at all. There are many reasons that makes it harder for the fans to stan them or build their parasocial relationship that is quiet important in building Kpop fandoms. So the artists situation ist allways precarious.

In a few years when the groups you mentioned or DC reach their 30s this may change since these groups bring a much bigger following with them.
