Why aren’t Youtube ads for MVs considered ‘payola’ or cheating?

  • I was scrolling through the Kpop music show analysis account and something stood out to me. I knew companies paid for views but Youtube filters them in the charts so i thought it doesn’t really matter.

Imagine my surprise when I learned music shows actually count the paid ads views?

Like a group can get 20m organic views, be #1 on the Kr trending page for days making them deserving of the full 1000-1500 points for SNS.. but then comes another company and flat out pays to get their group MV views and they jump from like 10m to 30m.. making them take the full SNS points and maybe win the award

How is this any different than sajagi? Where companies buy their groups album to give them higher sales figures and mediaplay them to be bigger than they actually are

Idk. I’m just so surprised. Like with so many useless talks about Payola in kpop spaces, Youtube views are actually the closest that come to the real thing and yet there’s no backlash at all.. Youtube filters these views for a reason, why don’t music shows take the filtered numbers? Or there at least needs to be pushback from the community against companies doing this.. it’s literally pay per view.. (Payola is short for pay per play btw)

  • posts like this reveal who hasn't been around that long in kpop and who has

it's just not that big of a discussion because everyone is used to it, but the ads as a drag discussion peaked around 2018-2020 i'd say

once the entire industry gets a hold of playlisting and there will be no one to drag since everyone's faves does it, kpop stans will move on to the next thing to drag groups like clockwork

  • For Korean advertisers, after a group gets their first Music Show win, subsequent Music Show wins are not that important.

Other than that, wins are good for fandom bragging rights, but they literally don't mean that much, since you can come back when it is an empty house and get a ton of wins.

Getting one win each comeback is good I guess, to show the group is still relevant in Korea.

  • I'm still confused over many stuff, and if anyone can help clarify it would be great

    • YouTube ads are promotion right? So that's a good thing isn't it? Like honestly I don't give much shit about how many views is ads or not. Views are views and more views from ads = more visibility for my faves. I wished my faves got more ads
    • Payola is supposedly illegal is it? Or at least that's what I was told when talking about payola or playlisting? Is it not?
    • If payola is illegal then shouldn't it then be condemned? Playlisting is legal? Is that the Spotify version of YouTube ads? If so that is good right? To get playlisting to get visibility and more people to listen to your song?
    • If playlisting is the Spotify version of YouTube ads then why should it be looked down upon if it achieve the same thing? Like same for me I don't care much about charts or views or listens so long it givesy faves visibility
  • I feel like kpop fans don't understand what the fuck payola is.

Payola is not paid promotion. It's not ads, it's not playlisting.

Payola is when a company or artist bribes or strong arms an institution that promotes music to give preference and slots for particular acts.

    Payola is illegal cause

    1. There's no transparency
    2. The way it works inherently shuts out other acts.
    3. The performance in many charts impacts the monetary gain from using payola

You can argue the moral quandry over Ads, and lord knows everybody was during like 2018=2019. But they're not payola. They're too visible and easy to account for diverge for the sake of cost/payouts to ever be Payola

  • This ^^^^

It's frowned upon for sure because the company can pay for it and it influences music shows, etc, but it isn't payola cause buying ad time isn't illegal.

As you can see YouTube views are always a point of discussion

  • everyone knows that but music shows are not getting the filtered views data from youtube so what can we do

Moreover, it normally wouldnt cause a fuss cause SNS points alone wouldnt help to win music show unless the points are close. In most cases, those that use youtube ads are barely charting well. Of course we have Jyp and SM heavily using ads but YG and HYBE generally dont
