not only that but Elemental also had the worst opening week for a Pixar movie, in the case of The FLASH it opened below "Black Adam" and is unlikely to past the later

also reminder that movie studios don't get every dollar at the box office and instead get anywhere from 1/3 to half of the cost of each ticket, to put things in perspective about how horrendous these numbers are

Elemental production budget was $200 million and the marketing budget $100 million so $300 million total

The FLASH production budget was $220 million and the marketing budget $110 million so $330 million total

Elemental need to do $600 million+ just to break even and FLASH need to do $650 million+, again not to make money but just to break even

the thing is that so far both are locked to end below $400 million so each is going to lose their studios at least $100 million (and in the case of FLASH maybe even $200 million...)

in the case of FLASH they at least are planning to reboot the DCEU so i guess it doesn't matter that much it if bombs but in the case of Pixar they already fired 75 workers and are likely going to fire more after this news

crazy how dominant Pixar was during the 2000s and 2010s yet this past couple of years most of their movies had either disappointed or straight up flopped

  • Damn.

I'm actually surprised that the fanboys and fangirls actually boycotted The Flash like they said they would. Honestly, that movie has been cursed from the get go. It's the only DC movie I was legitimately hyped for, but then the release date kept getting pushed back. They lost cast members and had to do reshoots, and then Ezra Shitter proved themself to be a complete ass. At that point, I lost all interest in the movie.

I'm happy it's bombing! And bad too. WB deserves to lose all of the money. They completely scrapped that Batgirl movie because it was apparently "bad", but most likely for a tax write off. Yet, they still chose to release The Flash even though people kept telling them they wouldn't support it because of Ezra. I mean, I get it, they spent 330 million on it and only 90 million on Batgirl, but in the end...they still ended up losing a lot of money.

Elemental though...I'm surprised about. They've been advertising that movie for like a year, and it's flopping. I thought for sure the kids would be flocking to that one in droves. Especially since the Little Mermaid did well (in the US and Canada... though it flopped in China, Korea, and some other countries for...reasons *eye roll*).

Damn...welp. Honestly just shows, Hollywood studios need to maybe start thinking about switching things up. Maybe calm down with the excess super hero movies, remakes, reboots, and sequels. The fact that the DCEU is going to be revamped AGAIN...while the MCU has like 5 movies slated to come out in the next 4 years. Like...people are just tired of it.

  • Lol flash, what a flop. WB played themselves. The signs were all there but they stubbornly carried on

Elemental had barely any marketing tbh. I think I only saw 3 ads for it while flash ads were constantly in my face lol.

  • Even before Ezra Rambo Miller, I don't know why anyone would expect The Flash to do well. Ezra was a shitty flash and DC was in a sorry state.

I didn't even know until last week that there even was an elemental movie and I don't get why they waited so long. Do kids even play those games anymore?

  • Has nothing to do with it. DC brand is just damaged.

Damn, at 1st I was going to argue it's just superhero fatigue in general, but then I just looked at the numbers for Shazam and Black Adam....and ooof.

At this point, the DCEU is hemorrhaging money. I thought Antman and Black Widow flopped, but Shazam....

Can't even compare. And The Flash is looking to be the 3rd casualty. At this point...they might want to just hang it up.

Finish off the movies that are too far in to cancel, and just leave it alone.

Is a reboot really going to help them at this point?

  • They need a break first and then reboot. Like at least 3-4 years for people to forget it all and then start building up slowly. But that said, would there be an interest in superhero movies in 3-4 years?

Not just a reboot and break, they need a fundamental chnage in direction. DC decided to kill Superman in his second film and he was absent fo 90% of a justice league film. That makes no sense at all. They also had a notable amount of films with villains as the lead (birds prey, 2x suicide squads). Why? Heroes are the ones everyone wants to see. There was no universe either, after justice league none of the films were connected in any meaningful way and none of the heroes made appearances in others outside credit secens which also never mounted to anything

If they start doing the same mistake again then they'll fail again

  • I don't understand how you make 600 million, where is that money coming from? I'm very confused about this matter. those two movies are made by stupid degenerate companies who cannot make anything of substance, they are very stupid people and the people hired to make these films and write the scripts and direct need to go back to cinema school and take 100 courses to fix whatever is going on in their degenerate brains. I do not like when people make bad animated films, all your doing is drawing and coloring and making a story about how to be a good person so that children know not to grow up and run people over with their cars or commit tax evasion, how hard is that? these idiots.

The Flash, from DC, idiots. we should just get rid of them, just kill off that company, just disband, just fire everybody. just move on. I do not understand the concept of box office, who is calculating these numbers? why does it take 200 million to make a stupid film with coloring and drawing? why do you need that much stupid money, it should cost 1 million that is enough to pay about 50 people to get into a studio and draw and color. CGI and effects for the flash, just stop making super hero movies, it shouldn't cost that much to put a fire effect I can download off imovie into a movie, it shouldn't. money laundering. kills me. just sickening.

  • i don't think it had to do much with a boycott, there just wasn't much interest on the FLASH

yeah is ironic how they didn't released Batgirl because they were afraid it could hurt the Batman brand yet they were willing to put Keaton's Batman along the radioactive landfill that is Erza Miller, they even promoted Batman more than the FLASH himself

Mario and Spiderverse happened, right now there are simply more interesting options out there in animation than the movies disney is forcing Pixar to pump every couple of months

Lol flash, what a flop. WB played themselves. The signs were all there but they stubbornly carried on

Elemental had barely any marketing tbh. I think I only saw 3 ads for it while flash ads were constantly in my face lol.

i honestly don't understand why they were pushing so hard for the movie to get a release, aren't they just going to reboot the whole thing? so why it matters if it gets a "proper" closure? the only reason i could imagine would be if the contract says it had to be released on theaters

i myself barely saw a couple of ads but i know that Elemental got plenty of marketing, is weird how studios can burn hundreds of millions in marketing yet if they don't feel you are a potential viewer you aren't going to see a single ad

Well Pixar has being following the exact same formula over and over again

"what if the elements were just like people and ugh... have like feelings and stuff "

that's basically the plot of the movie, Pixar needs to do something different other than sticking to their old formula that is clearly not working anymore

even "B" tier Animation studios like Illumination are killing it these days, the Mario movie seems to be locked to end as the highest grossing film of 2023

  • i don't think it had to do much with a boycott, there just wasn't much interest on the FLASH

I've seen a couple of people say that, but I'm not sure if that's true?

I know right after the Justice League (the 1st cut) was released and the Flash movie was announced, a lot of people around me were excited for it. If the timeline for the DCEU had been planned and executed better, I definitely think a Flash movie on the heels of the Justice League would have done better than it currently is.

The Flash of course is no Superman or Batman internationally, but in the US, he is at least a tier below them, and 2 tiers above Shazam and Black Adam (which both did meh). He might be slightly below Wonder Woman, but him and Aquaman are probably equal in terms of popularity in the comic book world and are about as well known internationally. And yet, Aquaman went on to cross 1 billion with Jason Mamoa as the lead. I have to see if The Flash ends up doing better than Shazam and Black Adam in the long run, but if Blue Beetle ends up outdoing the Flash, then I definitely know there is more at play than simple lack of interest in the Flash overall.

i can totally understand it flopping though

ezra miller is a terrible actor and flash's story does not have the heart that spiderman superman etc do

  • I’m not surprised. DC has been declining for years now. Batman is literally the only thing that is keeping them over water… maybe Aquaman too ( we will see). They had something good with Wonder Woman but ruined it with the sequel. The whole Superman fiasco also didn’t helped.

And on top of that keeping Ezra Miller. They must have something against the executives, like how can they keep their role after all the things they did. It’s crazy

For Elemantals, idk… it barely got any promotions and the storyline was very predictable and nothing new.

None of these movies really makes you wanna spend 30€ for a theater visit.

  • Or if the Flash they used was Wally West rather than Barry Allen.

I think that DC tried to revamp this Barry Allen to be more like Wally West's Flash since Wally's Flash is the longest running Flash, the more popular and well-known Flash, and the Flash that most people grew up with from the Justice League cartoons. Probably to get their version of Spiderman as you mentioned.

But then, it'd be hard to use Wally's Flash without incorporating Barry somehow or the Teen Titans.
