I actually really like how most 3rd gen groups never really taken seniority culture that seriously

  • Maybe some of them talk about this but as far as I know, I have never seen any idols from the 3rd gen talk negatively about their juniors' manners. Some of them even dislike it since it caused them too much struggle back then too. You know how they trying to lessen it even their fans not that nice but the idols themselves really open about this. I forgot who say this but he said it's unnecessary for junior to greet them at the waiting room as they know it's tiring to record the music show performance. Many of them actually talking about how they didn't really like that kind of formality.

Maybe some of you don't know but the seniority culture in Korea is as bad as their bullying issues. I have many Korean friends from my work place talking about the difference in seniority culture between my country and theirs. They can get a warning letter if they didn't bow to their senior even when they didn't notice them.

  • pls don’t generalize. you don’t know how they truly feel because they didn’t say it publicly. my fave always bow to everyone no matter seniors or juniors. that’s their manners approaching people but we can’t expect the same for everyone ig.

  • I feel like 3rd gen idols I.e people mostly born in the mid 90s were the most reticent and quiet gen. 2nd gen were all active on variety shows and Korean variety is very rowdy and they were very open with their words. And with 4th gen they’re the tiktok and social media children who are very open with sharing their lives online.

3rd Gen on the other hand was still a gen where everyone was told to be weary of the internet and they also didn’t go on many variety shows lol. It was all about online content that was very policed.

  • I saw someone say the ones who said they prefer for their juniors to not have to stress about greetings was BtoB.

    yup!

For most parts, 3rd Gen Idols showed respect to their Seniors, after all it's a deep rooted System in South Korea so it's never going to go.

But that doesn't mean that all Idols did that and they are generally called out by Fans.

Ultimately it's up to the Company to teach Trainees common etiquette, we know that JYPE has a grading for those type of things where they consider Attitude to be just as important as Talent. Afterall they could be potentially be around a Trainee for 7 years if they debut and as JYPark says, "he'd rather work for those that he can get along with than those that have Talent".

During Queendom 2 (2022), a member of WSJN joked that they didn't need to bow to Viviz because Viviz debut after them, the reply was instant, where a Viviz member said "Are you sure?". Viviz is a 3 member group that debut in 2022 but all members debut in 2015 for Gfriend, a year before WSJN.

  • I would prefer they remain respectful of traditional Korean etiquette and custom.

I'm tired of the lessening of traditional Korean custom and manner in kpop.

The more the international zeitgeist takes hold of Korean pop and moves it farther away from Korea proper, the quicker the pace of the loss of all the traditions and conservative artifacts that made Korean pop so special.

Imo unless you’re Korean you shouldn’t speak one way or the other. “Traditional custom” means nothing to people outside the culture. Ifans who say “that’s Korean culture” are equally as cringe. I know in my community what the cultural values are and I know how the youth always try to break away from it. Just because something is traditional doesn’t mean it’s right nor that it’s strictly followed. And without living in Korean such judgement can’t be passed.

    People should just stay quiet.

They didn't talk about it because they knew better they knew fans and the overall public can't be trusted. You can't be yourself most of 3rd gen understood the assignment YOU ARE A ROBOT. Do not express your true self. The newer gen got this false sense of comfort because fans etc were pushing all this inclusivity and be yourself narrative. And idols fell for this trap, now Bangchan like others see that showing the true you or giving people a look into your life gets you burned. Then fans will cry how come out idols never tell us anything? Especially when they hear about a death and wonder how an idol goes on acting like everything is happy and fine and nobody not even their own dog knows what is going on until its too late. That's why? You fucks make them become shutins they close out everyone not even their own family and friends realize anything is wrong. Ridicule someone for being human and watch how fast they stop sharing anything.

    I disagree.

I can as an outsider admire aspects of their traditional culture, such as for example decorum around seniority and adherence to a system of respect in that regard, find it valuable and support its continuance.

I wish my culture valued such things to such a degree.

It is ultimately up to Koreans. Yes.

But that doesn't forbid me from seeing something I think is valuable and voicing support.

  • You have no idea what real Koreans value that’s the point lol. That’s why it’s cringe.

(If you have a degree in Korean studies or live in Korea I of course redact the statement)

You THINK something is what Koreans value and that’s why your stance is problematic. It’s never right to speak over the voices of a culture in cultural issues.

Also as a disclaimer I’m not talking about issues which can be broadly understood by everyone like hate or bigotry. I’m talking about issues which require cultural nuance.

  • We'll agree to disagree. Feel free to think me cringe and problematic.

I'm not put petitioning to change their culture in any real sense.

Merely an observation of aspects of their culture that to my assessment I find commendable, and lamenting their decline.

    Nothing more nothing less.

    I don't think that's problematic nor cringe.

Perhaps I'm being cruel and heartless but how about we don't weaponize suicide and depression in this case?

Regardless of whether you feel he was right or wrong, this was not this an instance of him exposing his vulnerabilities and getting backlash, he was just complaining about his juniors lmao.

Personally I think the reasons people commit suicide are usually a lot more complex than simple hate comments, as is the case for most of the idols we've lost. Weaponizing suicide to defend idols from any and all forms of criticism, even when it's warranted, got old a very long time ago.

  • Curious are you from a culture that values hierarchy? I am. And it’s something that has resulted in deep rooted issues and causes suffering every single day.

It’s problematic because you’re speaking about it. Cultural values being eliminated in Asian countries is a welcome change for many in those countries. Hence your “lamenting” of it is condescending.

Anyway like I said stance like yours is as problematic as people who enforce western ideas on Koreans.

Certainly I can’t change your opinion so let’s agree to disagree.
