SM Entertainment (hereafter SM) has released a new YouTube video detailing the meaning behind their strategic partnership with Kakao Entertainment (hereafter Kakao) from the perspective of shareholders and fans.

Earlier on February 22, HYBE released an open letter to fans, artists, employees, and shareholders of SM Entertainment regarding their recent acquisition of Lee Soo Man’s SM Entertainment shares.

Later the same day, SM released a follow-up YouTube video titled “Strategic partnership with Kakao from the perspective of shareholders/fans.” According to the video, SM’s cooperation with Kakao signifies the meeting between the best global contents and the best global platform, and this relationship is an equal and mutual strategic partnership that can generate synergy and create a virtuous cycle. SM also explains, “This is not a meeting between contents and contents, rather it is a meeting between contents and platform. It will maintain the diversity of the entertainment industry while strengthening the business performance of SM and Kakao.”

Below are the five main points of the video:

    1. SM and Kakao partnership is closely in line with implementation of SM 3.0.

    2. Kakao is the best partner to accomplish the SM 3.0 Multi-Production strategy.

    3. Profitability of SM’s IP (intellectual property) will increase leveraging the Kakao platform.

    4. SM will successsfully establish a virtuous cycle between IP and platforms with Kakao to achieve successful global expansion.

    5. New SM Culture Universe (SMCU) will be built based on Kakao’s technology such as Connectivity Tech, AI (artificial intelligence), and Metaverse.

The korean sm stans prefer kakao ent even they have done illegal things like all the other companies...

  • For healthy competition and fair market I think HYBE and SM should be separate entities. Even if HYBE is much better at managing than kakao SM and HYBE should still not combine.

In every industry it’s always worse when major players merge. Without a doubt.

Does Korea not have any anti trust laws at all

Anyway my personal preference is HYBE so EXO can come to the US. They promised to send EXO here so I’m on the side that sends EXO to the US :pepe-toilet:

  • i have seen many kpop stans were fans of exo before bts rise up.in usa..sm don't know managed exo...they were stupid for focus about only china market...ccp rules...

When exo were mega popular here...

  • Kakao has a even bigger monopoly than Hybe does though.

Not in the idol market. If Samsung bought SM it won’t be anti trust either.

Sure kakao buying SM could create issues for some other entertainment sectors but this is in specific for the idol market. When considering monopolies we also have to address the specific markets they are targeting. Having a merger like this for the idol market is worse for the idol market in specific.

You could easily make a case that these are 11 of the top 18 groups in Kpop right now (Twice, BP, SKZ, Itzy, Ive, Idle, Stayc being the other 7). Hybe owning 60 percent of the top groups, plus the data already provided by SM showing how dominant a combined SM-Hybe entity would be in terms of physical and digital sales....well if you dont want monopolies or monopoly like powerhouses in Kpop, this is the union that you should be opposing the most. Hybe-SM would also have some top of the line soloists as well.

SM-Kakao vs Hybe-YG-JYP would be a far more equitable matchup.

  • Yes that’s what is bad. It’s not good to have all eggs in one basket that’s what leads to less original thought. It’s kind of the whole point lol.

  • Honestly I think there’s zero way any lay person who doesn’t work in the industry would even have a clue what the best option is. We don’t know how Kakao or Hybe would run things and if one does take over we obviously won’t know if the grass was greener on the other side.

Currently I think it’s best to treat Chris lee as just a shill for Kakao. It’s abundantly clear this whole corporation war is due to him wanting LSM out and probably lining his pockets as well so taking his word as Kakao is 100% best is a naive as hell, he’s in it for himself. Same with accepting anyone who comes forward saying Hybe is the 100% best choice. LSM himself likely doesn’t exactly want Hybe to take over, he simply wants revenge by setting his work on fire as one last fuck you.

  • the best would be sm and hybe as separate entities as far as the few companies in korea who is not distributed and produced by kakao and cj. that’s actually why the big 4 is called big 4 in finance, because sm-jyp and hybe-yg-naver as of now still own their system of production, distribution, and marketing. the big money is not only from music making but also album, merch, and stage production

to be frank, the current sm don’t need to be anybody’s sublabel since the additional share is still up in the air (and it seems like they found a problematic JV contract between SM’s board and Kakao Ent. today). what they need is to put their pants up and pick up the mess while creating board of directors that can hold up the demand of shareholders.
