Txt, NCT, Svt comeback all chart in top 10 Melon but Red Velvet, Twice, Itzy comeback didn't. Surprising?

  • Are you surprised the general public have moved on from girl groups (except Newjeans/Ive/Lsrfm) and listened more to boy groups now? What caused them to suddenly love boy groups?

  • Fandoms strong enough to chart vs fandoms not strong enough to chart

Conflating that with the general public ain’t it :pepe-narrow-eyes:

It’s interesting to see big 3 groups on the back-foot though. They had it too easy for too long and got away with delivering rubbish :pepe-narrow-eyes:

  • Melon has shrunk to the point that fandoms can manipulate it now like Genie and Bugs. It's hemorrhaged 50% of its users the last 5 years. Only about 4 million Koreans use it anymore, and in a country of 50 million people you can't gauge public interest off of Melon anymore.

Melon probably won't exist in 5 years. YoutubeMusic seems to be the preferred platform in Korea now.

  • The charts have changed in the fact that Melon’s user base has shrunk, a new exploit, and Armys in Korea are moving to other boy groups.

Melon has a lower userbase now so real-time is more impactful to raise songs. It is also the winter time so there are people streaming less. YT music has taken over and with K-pop’s focus on MVs, they have benefited from this even more.

There is now an exploit which is allowing newer songs to chart higher. If your songs are #1 on the latest hit 1 week and 4 week charts, your song gets prioritized. Boy groups figured it out through Candy’s success and are replicating it to various degrees. They ignore other charts such as Bugs and Genie because of their rule changes and low appeal and aim fully at Melon as the Melon chart is still used in cafes where the GP will listen. Look at TXT’s charting and how lopsided it is. It is a win win for Melon to hold users and for boy groups to increase their ULS. Only groups with big fanbases can do this, so don’t expect Treasure, Ateez, and Enhypen to pull this off. Only groups that can even touch the Top 100 can do this.

Lastly it is Armies moving to other fanbases. Let’s be honest, isn’t it a coincidence that this is happening after BTS’ hiatus. BTS was taking many boy group fans away from other groups, and now that they are not here, they are moving to other groups.

  • But SVT, NCT have been charting even after melon chart reform along with GG because their fandom is big in Korea, no one know this? ;judgingpepe:

Make thread like this after 4th gen groups like SKZ, Enhypen, The boyz, Ateez comeback and their whole album make it into melon 24h, daily chart, and weekly chart. For now, Melon is still GG domination.

Yeah idk why people are trying to downplay everything now that TXT is doing well

    ;judgingpepe:

  • Some interesting points were made but specifically for TXT, kmoas have been focusing their efforts since Can't You See Me era which was before the reform , so it's not as much a new strategy as one that really started to come to fruition!

  • If the ULs are low it should also help the GG OP mentioned to chart.

  • Why are people acting like MelOn still isn’t the biggest music platform in South Korea. The claim that they lost a little bit of their users, that holds truth, however, they are still bigger than every other streaming platform in SK. It still isn’t an easy walk in the park for many Kpop groups to even chart on melon.

(As itiswhatitisss mentioned on another thread: this is just from last year. MelOn still holds the crown for the biggest streaming platform.)

I find it funny that a song is considered a hit and the group, a digimon once they start to chart high on kcharts until it comes to BGs. What’s so impossible about people genuinely enjoying and listening to their songs? If people like it, it will chart. If they don’t, it won’t. Simple as that.
