I don't really understand a lot about awards shows tbh, I'm just here for the performances but obvously (G)I-dle seemed pretty mad about getting a made up award and it feels like they would have rather not had one at all. And i don't think MAMA was under any obligation to make one up for them right? So why do it? This whole situation doesn't make any sense to me

Hmm...well it's clear that MAMA lets the groups know ahead of time what awards they've won if any, since Soyeon obviously prepared and practiced her little rap verse and instrumental before they were given the fake award. Soyeon probably decided in secret to add her verse to their performance without letting MAMA know.
The alternative is that MAMA was informed ahead of time that Soyeon would be dissing them and didn't care, maybe they even enjoyed the publicity. Sometimes negative attention still does the job of keeping the award show trending on social media.
