Thinking about it, the claim that only fans care about boygroups doesn't make sense

  • Before being a fan, everyone had to be part of the GP at some point. I didn't was born a fan of the boygroups I'm a fan of (not that I remember). I have my particular experiences, but I believe everyone went through the same path of transitioning to general public to fan in their own way with their groups.

The thing is: the group is probably so interesting to them that they prefered to become dedicated and put money on their work instead of casually listening, what is positive. And If the fandom is constantly growing, this makes even less sense, cause It means an other amount of non-fans are noticing the male group in question and joining their following each new release.

So why is what is on the title not only used as a drag, but spread as truth?

    :sehunthinking:

  • What are you talking about? We're bots. I've embraced it.

  • hmm I suppose boygroups are more successful at cultivating casual listeners into becoming part of their fanbase as opposed to a lot of gg who can get listener but can’t as easily keep them long term. That kind of success is more fleeting and less stable.

and yeah having a hit song is great, but the con is there might be a lack of stability. You might be hot now, but next time, not so much.

Regardless, there is value in both kinds of success. and I certainly don’t think that the ways in which bgs are successful are lesser… for some reason.

Though still, I haven’t really thought about fans vs non-fans like that and you might be on to something :/

  • I've never thought about it like this before but when I got into K-Pop in 2012 I was heavily into 4Minute, KARA, 2NE1, and T-Ara before eventually becoming a settled T-Ara stan whereas I still listen to quite a lot of EXO, Vixx, BAP, BTS, SHINee, Big Bang, Block B, and B1A4 but I wouldn't describe myself as a fan of any of the groups apart from SHINee. All of the members are talented wonderful men except those two. I think more people listen to GGs but a select few get the majority of the public's attention whereas bgs usually have hardcore fans but they'll be hardcore NCT, BTS, SKZ fans rather than just a Twice fan if that makes sense. Or maybe it doesn't I'm just spitballing.

  • Yes, you got my point. Every K-pop group has a portion of general public who go to casual followers to hardcore fans. And If only fans cared about boygroups, then they would peak on debut, but there's always a constant influx of non fans getting interested to many of them. And boygroups successfully get them into a dedicated following, just that.

But how you said, any metric of success is valid. Regardless If they come from fans or casuals. If you are paying your bills, Its what matters.

  • I would disagree with your initial statement slightly that one had to be part of the GP now I'm only a fan of GG but I can appreciate BG notwithstanding however in my personal experience I got into one group at a time before getting into kpop as a whole. Thus I cannot say I was part of the GP before becoming a fan. Now even with BG like your fav SKZ you basically know how I started listening to them because you and kayn or someone else recommended them to me and I said I'd give them a listen and whilst not a fan per se I can certainly appreciate (some of) their music.

Obviously different people (maybe such as yourself) have different pathways to why and how they became a fan

I don't know If I get what you meant right, but I consider general public everyone who is not a fan of the group, don't listen and don't care about it at all, even If they are a fan of other K-pop groups or casual follow them.

As consequence, once in your life you had to go through stages where you don't know they exist > find out about them somehow > listen to a song for the first time > get into the group (If you like it).

But again, I'm talking about fans of boygroups.

  • right right makes sense - gotcha

I knwo but I think generally the same sentiment can be equally applied to GG as well

  • I don't get this fight between boygroup and girl group fans. KPOP as an industry thrives on fandom globally. Although girl groups are more embraced by the GP in SK, outside of that kpop groups are being hard-carried internationally. And generally, boygroups have always attained more fans globally than girl groups. It's just how it is.

It's cause K-pop stans always need the metrics where their faves stand out the most to be the biggest representative of organic success.

  • Actually i always considered "GP" people from SK so this is interesting 🤔 or countries where kpop is mainstream or at least widely known.

Cherry picking these things ends up being very dificult, cause even in SK, K-pop is more supported by people in their 10-30s who is into the genre and is a fan of an act and/or casual listen to more of them. Very few groups widely reach a demograph of people who don't care much about K-pop consistently.

In our talks on Melon, I assume that for sure, but I think it's applicable elsewhere too. I think girl groups of this nature are far more likely to be accepted and listened to in the west by both guys and girls, while most groups made up of "pretty" boys are heavily stigmatized and their fans are all 15 year old "fangirls". Boys would not be encouraged to like them due to it being seen as "gay".
