Have we ever has this many top girl groups in kpop before?

Let's see:
snsd
t-ara
after school/orange caramel
Fx
Secret
I would've added exid and aoa but they hit success 2014/post 2014. So yes, we have had this type of competition before, I think it's prominent now because bgs aren't hitting as much success as 2nd gen bgs.

SNSD and f(x) debuted just in two years 2007, and 2009
KARA also debuted in 2007
T-ARA debuted in 2009
Orange Caramel in 2010
Miss A debuted in 2010
Sistar debuted in 2010
APink debuted in 2011
if you look at this list now those are all legendary groups
I think it will hit us in next 5 years or so... what we are witnessing now is an era of divine KPOP girl groups

I mean like we have:
Twice
Le sseraphim
G(idle)
And HYBE have another girl group planned and YGNGG has yet to debut. It's kind of crazy how many girl groups we have at the top nowadays. Even if you remove the 3rd gen girl groups its still a huge amount. Was there even this much competition in 2nd gen?
Define top?

K-pop scene is just much bigger nowadays. There are enough fans that multiple GGs can sell over 500k, whereas in the past 100k was considered the golden standard that very few can reach (also cheap downloads killed the album market for a while).
If you check the yearly digital charts then you will see how fierce competition was in 2nd gen, Brown Eyed Girls, Girls' Generation, Wonder Girls, KARA, 2NE1, T-ara, f(x), Secret, After School, 4Minute Sistar, Miss A, Girl's Day, Apink all had multiple hits. And near the tail-end of 2nd gen AOA, EXID were popular too.

Yep :)
The most dominant era for GGs, the 2nd generation, (you missed out miss A)
The only GG you've listed that didn't have a GAON number 1 Weekly Song was the sub unit Orange Caramel which probably shouldn't have been listed.
Sistar and 2Ne1 dominated with 9 number 1 songs, SNSD had 7 but arguably could have had at least 9 if the GAON Charts started in 2007, f(x) had 4, WGs had 3, miss A had 3 etc

2nd gen
3rd gen was the only time girl groups were slighted mostly
-
In 2nd gen era multiple GGs were getting big hits

I was gonna list Miss A but I know they didn't have as much success from their debut, and Only you came in 2015, but you're right I should've added them
Added orange caramel since they were prominent + sub unit of after school, thanks for the extra info <<3
