Do you think we will have black kpop idols from big company?

  • I do believe that only big companies can make idols from other countries having a lot of popularity and attention from everyone ( exc countries like japan, china, etc than common seen in Kpop). Look how Hanni from Newjeans getting much buzz on her debut compare to Hanbin from Tempest and Ahn from BeautyBox. I mean, everyone can see the difference between Lisa and Bambam popularity compare to Sorn from CLC and Prince from Ghost9.

Alex and Fatou as the first black idols in kpop didn't receive a lot of attention and hype. Many don't even know there are black idols in kpop. Their group unfortunately can be considered as flop and nugu. So, do you think it's possible for big companies debuting a black idols like they do to SEA idols? I'm sure it will get a lot of hype and support than when small company doing it. And probably they will become more common in kpop scene like how SEA idols are now even they're still not many of them.

Note: I'm not a native English speaker, so I'm sorry if the term of black idol sounds offensive or wrong.

  • in the near future, i don’t think so.

SEA idols are still asian which is why companies are willing to debut them. i mean some koreans are still racist as hell; hanni got praised for looking Korean and being pretty for a Vietnamese… like wth.

i don’t think they’ll take an initiative unless that certain idol passes off as Asian. but with the new jyp and bighit girl groups coming out in collaboration with Colombia and greffen… who knows

  • Well yoon mirae is very well known singer from long time in korea and she is half korean half black. So it is definitely possible.

i think jyp american girl group may have girls from multiple ethnicities not just korean or east asian.

  • I think the closest we’ve ever been was Lee Michelle training at YG, she was supposed to debut in a girl group with Lee Hi, I can’t remember which other two girls were supposed to debut with them.

Insooni in the 70s in Hee Sisters…Yoon Mirae has been around since the late 90s. I think they both have done relatively fine because they’re facial features are quite Korean in comparison to Michelle whose features are more black.

But to actually answer your question, I don’t see that happening anytime soon. I do think a mixed Korean/black idol who appears more Korean than black could debut at some point. White/Korean mixed idols still get called halfs and mixed breeds but appearance wise they look more like a a non mixed Korean, and appearance is everything.

  • do you find yourself asking this question with other countries ?

like, why dont we have popular asian people in American pop although that is supposed to be far more likely?

when will we have japanese people in latin pop?

Of course. I think it's quite common topic among many about how it's hard for asian singers to hit big in America especially after Bts getting their grammy nominations . And I don't listen to latin pop, so no answer to that. But I'm very sure if there's significant interest of Japanese people in latin pop or it's popular among japanese, some will asking the same question. And this question is reasonable in kpop content as we already have Fatou and Alex before in Kpop, not to mention some big company did doing an audition in other countries too not only Korea.

how much of an unfiltered answer do you want me to give?

I dont want to offend anyone or make anyone feel bad but the way i see it, the answer to this is complex and a harsh reality check

Lee Michele was so good! And i love yoon mirae.

    insooni is an icon.

  • Koreans are also "obsessed with skin color" considering how often colorist comments are made and how prevalent whitewashing skin tones is.

Yes but western people and mostly US people are the only one who want to apply their standard for the whole world. That's the problem. Doesn't mean korea have any problem with skin color or with people of foreign country.

Also, I don't think op is from the US since they said they are not native English speakers. So, this was a strange comment tbh.

    yes it's my mistake

If you really love something, you have to know how to let go.

The kpop industry is actively seeking to export their product to other markets. That's the whole reason the hire chinese idols, sea idols, japanese idols etc. SM is doing a Hollywood unit. Black Swan just brought on idols from Brazil and India. I don't think this question is out of line. It's not like the op is asking when a non Korean will make it into the kdrama industry or bollywood. Kpop is branching out themselves. We can wonder how far that branching out will go. Your extreme reaction to this innocuous question calling US people trash is really strange.
