I really don't understand Sunmi strategy

  • Since 2013 she realeased only 3 mini albums :

All the others release are only single with 1 or 2 songs :pepe-just-smile:

Next year it will be 10 years she does solo song, and she still not have a full album. I don't understand at all why she has so few songs in her discography. It's not like she's locked up in the YG dungeon :pepe-tinfoil-hat:

I don't know if this strategy of solo songs earns her more but as a person who likes to listen to b tracks I'm quite disappointed. we would sometimes like to have a little more even if the waiting time between two comebacks is longer, I hope that we will have at least a complete album for the 10th anniversary :pepe-high-five:

  • she has more digital success than album sale

thats the right strategy for her I think

  • I feel like this is something a lot of krnb/khh artists do too. Lots of singles over several years and then maybe an album at some point that's mostly those previous singles. It's almost a reverse of the Western market where an album may be released and then songs from that album released as singles even 2-3 years later.

  • Tbh it's very rare for solo artists to get attention for bsides when they don't have unless they came from a group or they are digital monsters like IU because they don't have large fandoms backing them. So I can understand why most of them, especially khh and krnb artists, rarely release albums. They prioritise collabs and singles which works for them anyway.

  • I understand that argument about cost and album sales, but how can she increase her album sales if she never sells any? We are not talking here about someone who is new in the industry but of 9 years of career, we could still hope for a little more than 3 mini albums.

  • Isn't this kind of normal in k-music industry?

Idk, but every female soloist i follow have album or at least mini album. Yukika for example have a whole album with 13 songs. Eyedi have one too and these girl are not bigger than Sunmi.

She also got a tour this summer and she'll have some concert in Europe, so how can she have money for do concert in Europe but not produce an album in 9 years career :huuh:

I guess that is weird because the girls u mentioned are definitely less popular and have less financial investment. Maybe she just doesn't want to release albums. Even the number of minis she released is so less. 2 more songs added to her new release she could pass it as a mini.

  • She's not a big album mover but for me it's this less music than BP strategy that keeps me from becoming too attached. So like a self fulfilling prophecy kinda :pepe-shrug:

Isn't she getting more comeback than BP?

That's what i'm thinking, she like getting involved in the prod so maybe she just like always switch concept often :pepe-shoooketh:

alot of bsides are just paid dusts

Maybe she likes her music too much to let them go by without attention?

And Chungha.. 2nd full album coming up.

But to your question - in general the release of full albums are coming down in Kpop.

People are now listening on the go, and rarely go for the immersion of even hour-long stretches simulating the experience of a concert.

So mostly singles, or EPs with pre-releases etc.

Sunmi further focuses more/has a reputation on dance-choreo, which needs MVs.

MVs are costlier to produce and doing MVs for a 5+ songs of a same release will be a overkill, dilute the impact.

Hence.. singles and mini albums.. I am guessing.

I agree music fans are behaving more and more like spoiled rotten children. It's even worse in kpop I think. :peperain:
