Brand reputations are usually used as a simple indicator imo, to tell if somethings popular or not.

Since most Kpop fans don’t have access to industry tools like Brandwatch or Meltwater, this is the closest they can come to getting a snapshot view of how hot or trendy their faves are.

Each of these components: most searched, trending on Twt, interactions with the idol’s social accounts, for instance, form a complete picture. So for example, a person with a controversy might be the most searched, while a person who is an “it girl” might be creating buzz on socials because of the brand of pants she was wearing.

The method on the brand reputation rankings is unclear and it definitely has biases towards Korean idols, but I think it can provide a kind of view into popularity, since for instance totally unpopular idols don’t make the list.

This list is literally irrelevant. I don't know why people keep bringing it up.

They don't hold much weight but when I see bts members, bp & IU there I know I can still take it seriously to some extent. It just feels chord to reality

K-pop is more a popularity industry than music (ahem.. Blackpink), so it is important to be constantly in mention, in SM, in old Media etc.

So Naver search, Melon in S. Korea and Google worldwide is very relevant.

But of course not all popularity is good popularity, at least in Korea, where Celebrities are still expected to have moral standing.

So outside of actual charts, these data sources can't be ignored.

I am not sure how they do brand reputation, but Google search trends or Naver are very relevant.
