"A small minority does not represent the fandom"

  • Don't you think that a lot of people who like to use to "xxxx don't represent the entire fandom" are literally the same ones who are guilty of it?

They be getting into quarrel when someone call them out and be like "why are you basing the entire fandom from this small toxic minority", and 5 min later they be like "but remember last time when your fandom did this"

    And I'm like???

  • I think there's situations where it does not matter generalizing and some where they should not be generalized. But in general I've observed that people fighting over generalizations are usually the First to generalize others and generally get offended first when get generalized.

  • You aren't wrong. Everyone knows fandoms aren't a monolith but people just like to make generalizing comments to be inciteful. Don't know why we have to state the obvious every single time.

  • Hey I say that a lot! :pepe-torch:

  • Its beneficial to me to be treated as an individual

Its also beneficial to me to generalize everyone else, cause who got time for every single biatch out there

  • That's why I use "some" when I'm talking about fandoms especially the negative topics :cursing: :cursing:

The "some" still is considered generalizing to some people :sob-bunny:

  • I blv in generalizing all fandoms and don’t think it’s a big deal :pepepizza:

Why do ppl attach identify to fandoms? I guess I used to be like that but the more time I spent here the more I realized I literally do not care if you generalize and insult fandoms.

People do that and then have a problem when others do it to their fandom which is always funny lol.

Anyway bottom line your fandom isn’t your personality or identity or family there is no reason for you to feel offended if someone insults your fandom.

  • i dont have a problem with people generalizing a fandom while hating but when the generalization is made in an attempt to show their misogynistic views towards a majority female fandom thats when i get pissed off

but its usually only a handful of male users on this forum who do it

the general army trash, bg stans trash stuff doesn't faze me

  • There is a reason why most of my fights you'll read as SOME or better, when I'm giving my most intelligent opinion and I don't know who will be offended i just right (I'm talking in general here so it's not exactly at you, but if you think this s is you so just let this be you! :clown: ) kkkkkkkkkk

Anyways, generalizating isn't good neither i think it's right to do.

  • No joke, I’ve seen some fandoms on here act like that in fan wars and was speechless over the inconsistency. Look, I have bad memory, but to do such a 180 is beyond me, especially in such a short time period. How convenient that you changed your mind about that right then. I’m sure it’s because you actually meant it, not because you were desperate to win the argument. Have a great day/night!

Interesting. I do agree with this (the second part especially), but I do have a question for you about this. You said some things are okay to generalize and some should not be. If you don’t mind, can you provide examples of what types of generalizations are okay and not okay? Are some things okay to generalize, but only under certain circumstances? What do those look like? Is there any limit to how often people should generalize (as in, should it be done very sparingly or can it be done at a more “normal” frequency)? I’m not asking these questions to criticize your viewpoint, I just want to understand it better and in a more nuanced and specific way.

Generalizations don't matter that much in some places. Like let's say x fandom did such a thing or x fandom is always overrating their faves. They won't bother me much and I won't mind generalizing here.

But in other cases where people say x fandom is racist, or female fans are just their because they are horny that's not okay.
