What do you think about temporary/project groups?

  • (usually formed by survival shows...some examples of "permanent" groups formed by survival shows are TWICE, Momoland, Monsta-X, iKON, WINNER)

What do you think about temporary groups? Are they beneficial to the members in some ways? (shorter periods working as an idol, gives idols more freedom for after disbandment, being idols before could help them in re-debuting or chasing after something else in the entertainment industry, etc.) Are they less beneficial to the members in some ways? (sadness for not being able to promote with the temporary group anymore, maybe hard to go through the debut process again if they choose to/finding work after temporary group disbandment)

Also, how does it affect the fans of this group? Do the fans try to follow their faves after disbandment when they choose to do something else? Do the fans form a connection with the members and feel hurt after disbandment or desperate to get them to be a long-term group for the standard time (7 years)

    Examples: IZ*ONE, IOI, Kep1er

Changed the title of the thread from “What do you think about temporary groups?” to “What do you think about temporary/project groups?”.
  • Hot take, all groups are temporary. Some just last longer.

I wouldn't shy away from supporting and following a temporary group.

I think there are some huge benefits for the members, particularly those from smaller companies that would never have the resources to deliver such high quality come backs.

I still keep tabs on the activities of my favourite members, but probably not as closely as active groups.

  • Yeah, I don't really like using the word "permanent" to call groups with 7-year contracts. So that's why I put it in the "..." to say that they're not really permanent but that's often what they're referred to.

But by saying temporary here, I just mean the groups that typically aren't supposed to last for more than 3 years.

  • i hate them, i mean if they are already in established groups and it's some project and they go back to their main groups or even can continue promoting with them, that's one thing, but ever since i got into kpop i was really into 1the9 and they disbanded shortly after i got into kpop. I realized it was a project group LUCKILY a majority of the members got picked up elsewhere and are now in groups, but some didn't and you wonder where they went especially if you really liked certain members.

I also can't stand the narrative that if members didn't do some project group their main group would disband and somehow they were forced into doing this, i will never forget at the time how upset victon was that seungwoo was forced to do that or they were going to disband. It just angers me.

I know that Jinhyuk and Wooseok tried out for x1 and Wooseok made it but even with the vote manip, Top Media still won't let them go back to the group, imo this shit partly ruined UP10TION.

    Yeah, fair enough.

Doesn't matter to me I suppose. I'd rather know they have a 3 year expiry date but will get consistent content and opportunity vs a potential 7 year existence but inconsistent or sub-par promotion.

Like following IOI was so much more satisfying then following Gugudan.

  • not interested... it's funny to see people throw a fit when the group is over knowing it was a temporary group in the first place lol

I mean, if you know the connection people can sometimes form due to stanning their faves, then it's sort of understandable. Like, imagine watching their survival show or supporting groups with members that went into project groups, stanning them until however long the group length is and despite knowing that the project group is temporary, you care for the members and the music so much that the last thing you want is for them to disband.

IZ*ONE for example, I remember the members were really popular and WIZ*ONE seemed to have a really strong connection with the members and loved their music. IZ*ONE was a very, very successful group both in Korea and Japan with unique songs and beautiful music videos that just made sense. Getting to know the members and listening to their music, I can sort of understand why fans were still very sad or even petitioned to get IZ*ONE to be a group longer despite knowing that they weren't supposed to last long.

    Now, that's just sad...

I never actually heard of this happening...I'm sorry, that must be horrible for the fans and the members. :peperain:

And yeah, the thing about temporary groups is that since the members after disbandment have a wide range of options, I think that there are quite a few that choose to step out of the spotlight, at least, for a little while. It's sad for their fans but I guess being in a temporary group would help you to figure out your future maybe better than idols in a 7 year contracted group.

    Still, very sad... ;(

Yeah, It is sad like fans get attached and then that member just disappears? I understand a project group with established idols who can always go back to their group, but forcing them to go or the group will disband just doesn't sit well with me.

    Top media just sucks

  • Them disbanding sucks since most of these groups exist than less than 1 year

But than again I am happy for a few groups that they disbanded early and didn't stayed together for longer since example a group like JBJ would've been a mess if they had stayed together since what happend some specific guy back than who was in that group wich makes me feel super sorry for another member
