The definitive discussion: are all music shows' performances either fully lipsynced or using otherwise non-live audio?

  • Are all the weekly music shows only using full lipsync or other forms of non-live audio, or not? 27

    1. Yes, all the music shows are currently only using non-live audio (lipsync, audio recordings etc). This has been the case for a long time now (7) 26%
    2. Yes and no, some of the music shows are only using non-live audio, but 1 or 2 are still using live audio sometimes (9) 33%
    3. No (sort of): all the music shows use lipsync for some performances/groups/artists, and live audio for other groups/artists/situations, so it's a mix for all of them (10) 37%
    4. No idea, but I KNOW that my biases are singing live, even if all the others lipsync (especially the groups and artists I dislike, ofc they always lipsync)! (1) 4%

Since it's been a murky territory with a lot of differing opinions, I thought 'let's have it: what is the current situation at music shows regarding lipsync live audio?'

I don't watch music shows in full detail and on a frequent basis, so my stance till recently was fairly simple: if the artists are using handheld mics and standing or sitting, assume they're singing live, if they're dancing and not using handhelds, assume they're lipsyncing.

Also there was a show at Saturday that stated they only use live audio (Music Core?), but that was years ago that they said that for the last time, so it's probably not true anymore.

So what is it these days: are there people that have been following music shows more closely with a good ear too that can say something about it?

Are the weekly music shows using only lipsync, or LAR, or live audio, and which show uses what?

Out of curiosity, I've added a poll.

    Thoughts?

  • Damn this topic is ALWAYS a hit thread.

This is what true live singing sounds like when you're doing choreo.

  • Another example of what live singing sounds like while you're moving. Notice the mic sounds as Sieun sings.

  • Music Core used to claim they only use live audio, but that isn't true anymore?

I hadn't expected KBS Music Bank to be the only one using live singing these days, I'd have expected it to be Inkigayo or Music Core or such. But those are all full lipsynced (non-live audio) now?

the Music Core thing is false but for whatever reason kpop fans still spread it to say their faves don't lip sync. perhaps it was true at some point in the past, since MBC made that claim years ago, but nowadays almost every Music Core performance is lipped

  • I have not heard a live on music shows...like ever. Except for encores. So yeah, I pretty much assume idols are lip-synching at music shows. Not necessarily award shows though.

  • Depends on artist and show but it just seems like inkigayo, theshow, show champion has more lip synced performance as opposed to music bank and music core, m countdown, music core overall

  • I voted most are lipsynced but a few have live vocals sometimes (though I would say with varying amounts of backtrack).

I posted this poll a few weeks ago and thought the results and discussion was interesting

  • Some music shows use the pre recorded version and sometimes the agency only want their artists to lipsync. So it’s hard to say that show x doesn‘t allow lipsynching when almost every show has - those who sing live with a medium to low loud backtrack, those who sing live with a loud backtrack or AR and those who fully lipsync - lastly those who sing live but they choose the AR over the live
